3 Political Impact Texas joined the Confederate States of America Houston removed from office because he failed to sign an oath to the Confederacy Conscription Act – 60,000 Texans joined Confederate army Some Texans sided with the Union and joined the Union forces

4 Economic Impact Shortages of goods, such as coffee, medicine, clothing, salt, paper Trade along Mexican border continued & supplied some of these items to Texas Cotton production declined (slowed) during the civil war, increased after Need to feed soldiers increased production in corn & wheat

5 Economic Impact Shortage of free labor Inadequate production in agriculture & business Shortages were also due to Union blockade along the Texas Coast New factories were opened in Austin & Tyler
