Thinking it through Developing thinking in the languages classroom

Why develop thinking skills?  “Je suis l’écriture autour de ma une visite en France”  “Sir, what’s the French for ‘is’?”

 “Je wrinkle mon vélo”

What are thinking skills?  Skills that emphasise the process of learning  ‘learning to learn skills’  Metacognition – thinking about thinking

Why use thinking skills strategies?  To teach pupils to think for themselves  To focus on skills rather than content  To help pupils to deconstruct language and understand that languages have underlying patterns and rules

Why use thinking skills strategies?  To encourage pupils to articulate their understanding  To give pupils the opportunity to learn from each other  To enable them to work collaboratively

Why use thinking skills strategies?  To promote active involvement  To foster links with other subjects by using similar techniques

What do they do for us as teachers?  Show us gaps in pupils’ understanding  By ‘taking the lid off’ how pupils are thinking, they enable us to tailor our teaching strategies to take their learning forward
