Focus Blueprint
2
Keys to the Focus Blueprint: Actionable: Each item should be specific enough that it’s actionable. Appropriate: It should help to answer the question, “Why am I doing this?” Mirror: Post in a visible place as a constant reminder of where I should be spending my time & energy. More Detail: This tool is intended to help increase focus for an individual. Therefore, it should not be a laundry list of all tasks for that individual or role. Instead, it should be limited to only those items that are critical to my role. I should do what I can within reason to delegate or ignore the rest. There is no magic in the number of strategic focus areas (represented by blue boxes along the top) or actions below each. As designed, the tool allows space for 6 focus areas and 5 action items each. Depending on the specific role, you may have much less than this. Avoid going beyond this count though. (once you’ve filled in your grid, delete all unused blocks) Placement is critical to this “blueprint.” The strategic focus areas should go in order from left (most strategic) to right (less strategic). Similarly, the action items under each strategic focus area should go from top (highest priority) to bottom (lower priority). Therefore, the most strategic, highest priority items should be in the upper left corner of the “blueprint.” Actions under each strategic focus area should begin with a verb (i.e. actionable). The “hotspots” designated by red highlighted boxes are those items that are currently high priority based on specific timing, events, etc. For example, if we are moving to a new HQ, “Lead Workspace Design” will be a high priority for that period of time. This simply reinforces the visual reminder. While in the same role, the strategic focus areas (blue boxes) should not change very often, the actions under each may change slightly more often, and the hotspots (actions highlighted by red boxes) will change relatively frequently. Under your name and title, include your “role one-liner.” Think of it as your elevator pitch. If asked, “What do you do?”, this would be your answer.
