Extracurricular Activities: –School run activities for students that take place outside the classroom and standard curriculum Funding –In school’s budget –Donations –Student Fees After the Bell Rings…

Pay to Play? Student fees for extracurricular involvement (sports, band, etc.) Budget for schools is too tight for all the activities This doesn’t happen at all schools

Who Can Participate? No Pass, No Play Policy –In order to keep students academically successful, students must maintain a certain GPA Enrollment –At most schools must be enrolled in school full-time

Be Involved! Types of Activities –Academic/Cultural (Geek) –Arts (Freak) –Athletics (Jock) Multiple Activity Involvement –Be involved with more than one activity! Stereotypes –You are a unique person, don’t let your activities make you someone you’re not

Jocks ~Athletics Elementary –PE Clubs –Jump rope Middle –Team sports –Dance clubs High –More competitive team sports –Dance teams –Managers

Geeks ~ Academics Study Groups Competitive Subjects Religious/Culture Clubs FFA and 4-H Student Government Miscellaneous

Being an athlete ~ Results Team Sports –“Risky Behavior” – more likely to drink, get drunk, and drug use (steroids) –Better academic outcomes –More likely to attend college –Job with a future that they enjoy Based on Michigan Study of Adolescent Life Transitions

Results from Arts Performing Arts –Less likely to drink, to get drunk, and do drugs –Greater enjoyment of school –More likely to attend college –Greater likelihood of graduating from college –Positive interactions among male and female peers Based on Michigan Study of Adolescent Life Transitions
