Titanium By Basil Sunier

Discovery Titanium was discovered in 1791 by the English clergyman William Gregor Four years later, German chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth returned and isolated the new element He suggested the name of titanium for the element in honor of the Titans, mythical giants who ruled the Earth until they were overthrown by the Greek gods

Characteristics Titanium's relative density is about half that of copper and about 60% that of iron For its weight, titanium is about six times stronger than aluminum and about twice as strong as iron Titanium has a much better heat resistance than aluminum Titanium is safe because it is biocompatible and does not harm the human body Titanium is 100% recyclable and is very friendly to the environment

Source of the Element Titanium is the ninth-most abundant element in the Earth's crust It exists mostly in Australia, Canada, China, New Zealand, Norway, India, Ukraine, North America and South Africa Total known reserves of titanium are estimated to exceed 600 million tons

Uses Titanium is used in steel as an alloying element to reduce grain size and as a deoxidizer Titanium is often alloyed with aluminium vanadium, copper iron, manganese, molybdenum, and with other metals for various reasons, such as reducing grain size and to harden Titanium mill products can be found in industrial, aerospace, and recreational fields
