Information about the SOS Children’s villages worldwide Hermann Gmeiner built the first SOS Children’s Village at Imst in Austria, focusing on children who have lost their parents or cannot be raised up by their biological ones. It was important for him that children grow up in a stable family environment, are supported individually and become strong, independent and self-confident adults. The aims of today are still to fight for children's rights, health care, education, emergency relief and the strengthening of women. 500 SOS Children’s Villages in over 133 countries and territories worldwide focus on this system; over 78.000 girls and boys got a new home. Nearly every village has a kindergarten, a day-care centre, a pre-school and a vocational centre. Many facilities, like the kindergarten, are also open for children living in the neighbourhood around the SOS-Children’s Villages. The international non-governmental social development organisation “SOS Children’s Village” takes care in developing countries as well to strength and stabilise families. They support disadvantaged families to prevent crises and manage their lives independently, learn to self-organise themselves and take care of their children. As a sponsor you have the choice to take a sponsorship for a child in a SOS Children’s Village or to support a SOS-facility.
