Module Medical XVIII. - 2 Drill PURPOSE To demonstrate importance of preplanned medical intervention SCOPE Efficient handling of contaminated victims

Module Medical XVIII. - 3 Objectives To enable participants: 1. to protect themselves, emergency room and equipment by preparing reception area 2. to triage injured and contaminated persons 3. to locate all areas of contamination on patient 4. to manage contaminated material 5. to collect and label samples

Module Medical XVIII. - 4 Scenario l Mechanical engineer at ABC Plant entered small utility building to assess reported faulty thermostat on a thousand gallon gas hot water heater (in heating system) l Utility building located adjacent to building where low level radioactive waste is sorted. Buildings separated by wall of brick and glass

Module Medical XVIII. - 5 Scenario l As engineer tank, heard powerful explosion l Resulting blast wave blew part of wall into adjacent building and sent showers of broken glass, wood and metal shelting on employee working in the waste handling area l Thus, one individual injured as result of explosion, believed contaminated with radioactive material

Module Medical XVIII. - 6 Additional information l At any time during drill you may request more information Form 3 groups 1. to monitor contamination level 2. to prepare reception area 3. to start medical intervention l During drill you can change roles

Module Medical XVIII. - 7 First phone call data l In a few minutes an injured employee, possibly contaminated, is coming to local medical service

Module Medical XVIII. - 8 First medical data - 35 year old man, with painful skin injuries (left forearm and left thigh) - Conscious - Blood presure: 125/70 mm Hg - Heart rate: 80/min. - Breathing rate: 16/min - No bleeding
