Introduction to InDesign Understanding the Basics DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Why Adobe InDesign? Industry standard Advanced capabilities Develop workplace readiness DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Getting Started How to Open InDesign Understand the toolbars DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Accessing InDesign 1. Start Menu 2. All Programs 3. Adobe CS3 Folder 4. Adobe InDesign 1 2 3 4 DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Opening a New Document Select New Document Review new screen Landscaping Margins Columns Click OK DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Review the InDesign Layout Tool Panel Control Panel Panel Menus DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Using the Tools Panel See the Tools Panel Handout To type text, which tool would you select? To select and item and move text, which tool would you use? To rotate a textbox, which tool would you use? DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Adding a Textbox Select the text tool. (Letter T on the tool panel.) Draw the text box any place in the document. Type your name. DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Change the Font & Size Double click in the textbox. Select the text. Using the Menu Panel, change the font and size. Font Font Size DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Change the Color of the Text Using the Panel menu, select swatches. Select desired color. DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Move the Textbox Try moving your textbox. What happened? Select the Selection Tool. Select the textbox. With the pointer on the blue box in the center of the textbox, move the textbox to another location. DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Rotate the Textbox Select the Rotation Tool. Rotate the textbox. DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Selection Tool To Select an Object, use the selection tool to do one of the following: Use the selection tool (black arrow). Click the following text box: DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Direct Selection Tool To Select a specific Object inside a group, use the direct selection tool (white arrow) to do the following: Use the direct selection tool (white arrow). Click same text box. DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Font Family and Size With your name, change the font and font size. To select a font: In the Character palette, select a font in the first Font menu. To change the font size: In the Character palette, choose the desired size in the Size menu. DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Pencil Tool Use the pencil tool to draw open and closed paths as if you were drawing with a pencil on paper. It is most useful for fast sketching or creating a hand-drawn look. This is a very common tool in all graphics software programs and works much the same in all of them. If you like to draw on the computer, InDesign allows you to do so easily. DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Shape Path Tools To draw a path, select the line, ellipse, rectangle, or polygon tool in the toolbox. To use the Ellipse and Polygon tool, simply click on the arrow in the corner of the Rectangle Tool and hold until the “Fly Out” Menu appears. DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Line Tool Now, click on the Line Tool. Draw a line. On the control palette at the top of your screen, change the point size and type (located under point size.) DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Rotate Tool To rotate selected objects by dragging: Use the selection tool (black arrow) and click on a graphic. Select the rotate tool. Drag the graphic around to change it’s position. DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Free Transform Tool This tool works much like the rotate tool. Try it and see. DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Shearbox Tool Shearing a selected object slants, or skews it. Let’s try it. Using the selection tool (black arrow), click on an object. Then, click on the Scale tool and hold down until the Fly Out menu appears. Choose Shear tool. Apply to object. DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Eyedropper Tool If you want to reuse a specific color that is already used in text or a graphic, use the eyedropper tool to select the colour. To use this tool, deselect (Edit—Deselect All). Now, select the eyedropper tool. Click on a coloured object in an image and choose the fill section of the tools palette. With the eyedropper, click on an object. Try another object. What happened? DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Gradient Tool Use the selection tool (black arrow) and click on an object. Select the gradient tool and drag across the object. Now using the gradient tool on this same object, drag your arrow the opposite direction. What happened? DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Scissors Tool Select an object. Click on the scissors tool. Drag across the selected object. What happened? TIP—click the selection arrow and click off of the object to turn off the scissor tool. DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Try out the next few tools! The following tools are advanced. Investigate and see if you can figure out what these tools do. HINT—You can use the internet as a resource to help you. DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Pen Tool Drawing capability DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Pen Selection Tool Create vector art in InDesign using the pen selection tool. DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Scale Tool To scale a selected object: Select the scale tool. Position the scale tool away from the center point of the object and drag. To scale the x or y axis only, start dragging the scale tool along one axis only (drag straight across). To scale proportionally, drag exactly between the x and y axes (drag at an angle.) To constrain scaling to either x or y axes, or both x and y axes proportionally, hold down the Shift key as you drag. For finer control, start dragging farther from the object's point of origin. *Hint—the Scale tool can be found on the same button as the Shear tool. DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Empty Graphics Frame Tool To draw a placeholder (empty graphics frame), select the ellipse frame, rectangle frame, or polygon frame tool in the toolbox. Drag in the document window to create the path or frame. You can constrain the shape as you draw by doing one or both of the following: To constrain a line to 45- degree angles, or to constrain the width and height of a path or frame to the same proportions, hold down Shift as you drag. DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2

Zoom & Hand Tools The Zoom Tool and the Hand Tool are methods of navigation. To get in and out of an image, click on the magnifying glass icon to use the zoom. To move the image around on the page or the workspace, use the hand tool. DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2
