Electrolytes By Jake, Elliott, and Jacob
2
What are electrolytes? Electrolytes are substances that turn into ions in a solution and are then able to conduct electricity. Electrolytes are essential for normal body functions, such as digestion and cellular respiration.
3
Where are Electrolytes? Electrolytes are found in solutions of acids, bases, salts, and even some gases. The primary ions in electrolytes are sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, and hydrogen.
4
Affects of Electrolytes Increase in amount of water in your body. Increases blood pH. Stimulates muscle action
5
What are Electrolytes Found in Sports Drinks Contain sodium and potassium salts which replenish lost nutrients after a workout or exercise which causes dehydration. Athletes who workout out for a long period of time are at a risk of suffering from dehydration due to lack of electrolytes.
6
Dangers Since sports drinks also contain a high amount of sugar, they are not recommended for daily use by children. Instead, children should drink water while exercising and replenishing fluids.
7
Signs of Dehydration Thirst Headache Weakness Dizziness Cramps Chills Vomiting Nausea
8
Electrolyte Imbalances Hypernatremia- Too much sodium Hyponatremia- Lack of sodium Hyperkalemia- Too much potassium Hypokalemia- Lack of potassium
9
How to Treat Electrolyte Imbalances Increase intake of certain foods, such as potatoes and bananas for potassium, and vegetables for sodium and magnesium. After an extended workout, drink sports drinks with at least 85 grams of potassium and 45 grams of sodium.
