4 Butterflies are beautiful, flying insects with large scaly wings. Like all insects, they have six jointed legs, 3 body parts, a pair of antennae, compound eyes, and an exoskeleton. 6 Stage 1 The Egg Stage 1 The Egg A butterfly starts it’s life as an egg. A butterfly starts it’s life as an egg.

7 Stage 2 Larva or Caterpillar The larva (caterpillar) hatches from the egg and eats leaves and flowers almost constantly.

8 Stage 3 Pupa or Chrysalis It turns into a pupa (chrysalis). This is the resting stage.

9 Stage 4 A Butterfly A beautiful, flying adult butterfly emerges!!!!!
