Background LGBT-Friendly Campus Climate Index is a national assessment tool, owned and operated by Campus Pride (www.campusclimateindex.org)www.campusclimateindex.org NDSU first completed the survey in August 2007, by Safe Zone and Ten Percent Society representatives. Representatives from Safe Zone and Pride Network re-evaluated in August 2009. NDSU's ratings in 2007 were: Overall: 3 of 5 stars Sexual Orientation: 4 of 5 stars Gender Identity/Expression: 2 of 5 stars NDSU’s ratings in 2009 are: Overall: 4 of 5 stars Sexual Orientation: 5 of 5 stars Gender Identity/Expression: 4 of 5 stars NDSU ratings can be found and compared with other campus ratings on www.campusclimateindex.org www.campusclimateindex.org NDSU

2009 Survey Ratings Overall Campus Climate Score: 4 of 5 stars (72%) NDSU has a commitment to LGBT & Ally people on campus 2007 Survey Result: 2 of 5 stars (38%) Sexual Orientation Score: 5 of 5 stars (100%) NDSU has effectively included sexual orientation in its framework for diversity 2007 Survey Score: 4 of 5 stars (78%) Gender Identity Score: 4 of 5 stars (76%) NDSU expressly uses the words ‘transgender,’ ‘transsexual,’ and/or ‘gender identity/expression’ 2007 Survey Score: 1.5 of 5 stars (30%) NDSU

2009 Survey Ratings LGBT Campus Safety Score: 5 of 5 stars (100%) NDSU has made progressive LGBT efforts to address the safety concerns of LGBT people 2007 Survey Score: 2 of 5 stars (36%) LGBT Counseling & Health Score: 4.5 of 5 stars (80%) NDSU has made efforts to address LGBT emotional and physical health needs 2007 Survey Score: 3 of 5 stars (54%) LGBT Recruitment & Retention Efforts Score: 4 of 5 stars (72%) NDSU has made positive strides in actively recruiting and retaining LGBT people as an important component of the campus community 2007 Survey Score: 2.5 of 5 stars (48%) NDSU

Recommendations Attention towards making commitment to LGBT & Ally community more visible on campus Regular assessments of attitudes and perceptions of NDSU community towards LGBT people Compare Gender Identity/Expression score with Sexual Orientation score: note progress and need for more trans-inclusive programs and services Further examination of NDSU policies to consider changes for more inclusion of LGBT people NDSU

Recommendations Continued attention to visibility of LGBT commitment and institutional support mechanisms for LGBT & Ally people Fostering an academic environment that supports the individual learning outcomes of every student, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression Further attention towards making the classroom experience inclusive and LGBT-friendly Further attention to LGBT training for faculty and bolstering open LGBT dialogue in the academic setting NDSU

Recommendations Continued support for LGBT student involvement opportunities and specific outreach to different communities Evaluation and improvement of housing options and the development of trans-sensitive housing accommodations and equitable policies supporting LGBT people Ongoing examination of LGBT counseling and health concerns, specifically, emotional and physical concerns of people coming out and, transgender populations Continued growth in recruitment and retention of LGBT & Ally students through development of outreach and retention programs targeted at LGBT & Ally communities (e.g. LGBT mentorship program, LGBT admission fairs etc.) NDSU
