10 page 9 Institutions/Support DFG: International Research Training Groups International Research Training Groups Purpose: To provide funding for international research training To promote the internationalisation of science and research in Germany Application requirements/ Eligibility: Faculty members working at German universities and their counterparts abroad jointly apply Joint programme needs to prove the excellence of the individual research site as well as the benefits gained from the integration of complementary expertise Each group must have a viable size of 5–10 researchers Foreign partners are expected to acquire funding from national sources for complementary financing Cooperation agreements are possible with any country Funding: The DFG supports the German partner with funding for: Doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships Travel allowances Funding for short- and long-term exchanges Joint workshops and seminars Consumables, equipment Sabbaticals for participating university teachers

12 page 11 Institutions Max Planck Society/Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, MPG www.mpg.de The MPG promotes research done at its own institutes. Research in the natural sciences, biosciences, social sciences, arts and humanities. About 80 institutes, research centres, laboratories and research groups, some 11,200 staff, of which around 3,100 were research scientists. Around half came from abroad.

The research responsibilities of the Leibniz institutes span the gap between knowledge- oriented pure research (see MPG) and applied research (see FhG). 24 page 23 Conditions Legal conditions: Visa § Special agreement Russia-Germany; New Immigration Act: Visiting academics and researchers will normally receive a limited residence permit (Aufenthaltserlaubnis). This is issued for the purpose of gainful employment. Highly-qualified persons (which expressly includes, in particular, academics and researchers with particular subject experience and expertise, as well as academic and research staff in outstanding positions) can, in particular cases, immediately receive an unlimited settlement permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis). Financial conditions: € Moderate living costs: A single needs an average amount of € 680 per month. Grants for academics/researchers – between approx. 1300 – 3000 €
