2 I. The “Era of Good Feelings” A.The term was used to describe the presidency of James Monroe. B.The term was used to describe growing feelings of nationalism and patriotism that spread across the nation after the War of 1812. C.During the period, there was increased National Pride, American Loyalty, and harmony in national politics with the Republican Party in power.

3 II. Economic Nationalism A. The Republican Party launched three ambitious programs that would help to unify the nation: 1. New National Bank 2. Imposed a Protective Tariff 3. Built Canals and Roads

4 III. The Second National Bank A. The Republican Party originally opposed a national bank. B. In 1816, John C. Calhoun of S.C. introduced a bill for the second national bank and was supported by Henry Clay & Daniel Webster.

5 C. The new National Bank had the power to issue bank notes that became a national currency. D. The National Bank also had the power to control STATE banks.

6 IV. The Protective Tariff A. A revenue Tariff provided income for the U.S. government. B. A protective Tariff taxed imported goods from other nations to increase their prices. C. Republicans passed the Tariff of 1816, a protective tariff to help American manufacturers sell their goods cheaper than imported goods. American TV $250 Foreign TV $225 + Tariff = $275

7 V. Internal Improvements A. Republican’s wanted to improve the nation’s transportation to encourage trade between the states. B. In 1816, Calhoun sponsored a federalinternal improvement plan that would build new national roads and canals. C. The plan was vetoed by President James Madison. “Spending money to Improve transportation Is not expressly granted In the Constitution!”

10 VII. Nationalist Diplomacy A. Spain could not control its border betw. Florida & Southern US. B. This angered Americans because runaway slaves hid there and the Creek Indians used FL to stage their raids on American settlements. C. In 1818, Andrew Jackson invaded Florida 1. Destroyed Seminole villages 2. Seized Spanish settlements (St. Marks / Pensacola) 3. Removed the Spanish governor

11 D. Adams-Onis Treaty 1. Spain cedes (gives) Florida to U.S. 2. Finalized the Western Boarder of the U.S. Then Secretary Of State John Quincy Adams helped settle the dispute with Spain.

13 VIII. The Monroe Doctrine A. The Quadruple Alliance was formed to suppress movements against Monarchies in Europe. 1. Included Britain, Austria, Prussia, and Russia. This is right after the Napoleonic Wars, Europe wanted to stop future bloody revolutions and guys like Napoleon…..

14 B.Monroe Doctrine declared in 1823 to say that the American continents were closed to colonization. 1. Helped America avoid Foreign alliances. 2. Kept European countries out of America.

16 The Missouri Compromise Despite the Era of Good Feelings, there were increasingly heated debates about the future of slavery In 1819, there 22 states in the Union; 11 Free and 11 Slave In 1819, Missouri applied to be a State Should Slavery be allowed to expand Westward???

17 Missouri Compromise To balance political power in the Senate a Compromise was created: Maine added as a FREE state Missouri added as a SLAVE state Jesse Thomas of Illinois proposed an AMEDMENT; prohibited slavery in the LA territory North of Missouri’s Southern border Henry Clay of KY “The Great Compromiser”
