Confirmation... Who, Why, What, Where, When & by Whom

Who North Taranaki South Taranaki Wanganui Manawatu Hawke’s Bay

Who For those who can appreciate the bigger vision of ‘what God is doing in their lives and in the world’ We are sticking with the 14-16 yr target age group with flexibility

Why Confirmation is a sacrament of initiation Confirmation is not: a ‘rite of passage’ confirming ‘my own faith’ Although this can be a ‘by-product’ a crash course in Catholicism getting the kids ‘done’ before we lose them about having lots of numbers attend

Why The questions to be asked are: (by you) Is this parish ready to accept these young people as: Full & active participants in all aspects of parish life...??? (by the Candidate) Am I ready to be challenged to become a full active participant in what God is doing in the world...???

What The main actor is God; everything we do is by way of responding. It’s more about our response to God’s commitment than our need to commit to God. Its about Greater intimacy with the Father, Son and Spirit & Becoming participants in what the Father, Son and Spirit are doing in the world. This is what we are initiated into. It’s a starting point not the end of the journey

What Initiation is... Baptism Confirmation Eucharist  Washing  Anointing  Nourishment

Where Main elements of a Sacrament: People (Gathered in Place) God’s Action An Encounter Response Recognised by Ritual and Symbols So it’s anywhere where this can happen!!

When Sunday or Regular Mass Shouldn’t be disconnected from the faith community North Taranaki South Taranaki Wanganui Manawatu Hawke’s Bay

By whom Essentially the main reason confirmation was originally separated from baptism was do to with the role of the bishop. ‘Confirmation’ refers not to the role of the candidate but to the role of the bishop – Confirming the Baptism in his role as head of the local church. Confirmation by a Bishop links a Candidate with the wider church. Its bigger than our normal Sunday or experience of Church. This all links back to the main point...

CONFIRMATION IS... initiation to what God is doing, has done and will do in the world in the life of the community we are involved in about an experience of something bigger a memorable thing
