4 Necessary for Salvation
Necessary for Salvation!? Does that mean only Baptized Christians are saved?? The church teaches that Baptism, through which one Becomes a member of Christ’s Body, it the fullest means Of Salvation For those who have received the Gospel and have the Opportunity to be baptized, Baptism is the necessary Way to their salvation Christ died for all humankind, all are offered salvaton Through the paschal mystery, in ways that are known to God.

5 Salvation Con’t Those who seek the truth and try to do God’s will in accordance with the truth as they understand it can be saved. Children who die without being baptized are entrusted to God’s mercy. God desires that every human being be saved and our hope is that God will not leave innocent children without a means of salvation.

How does the Catholic church’s understanding of the phrase “born again”differ from some other Christians’ interpretation of that phrase? What does it mean to say that Baptism is necessary for salvation? How can non-Christians be saved?

Each sacrament has matter and form Matter = the material things we see, use. Form= the specific, special words we use. In Baptism, as in all sacraments, the Christian community, the Church is the primary symbol. In addition to this…………….

9 …there are four symbols in the rite of Baptism
Water(matter)= at the core of the sacrament of Baptism is the water rite. It is essential and the words (form) “ I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Without this action and these words no baptism has taken place. 10 Oil: Oil is a symbol of: Healing Strength Protection
For anointing kings and those set aside for sacred duties. The anointing with oil of the new Christian= being chosen to share in the risen life of Jesus and to receive the Holy Spirit through him.

11 The white(new) garment
To symbolize the radical newness of a life in Christ, of being “clotherd in Christ” the baptized receives a white or new garment To wear after the water ritual. In appearance as well as in spirit, the person is a “new creation.”

12 A lighted Candle: Share the light of Christ
Light dispels darkness Where there is light, there is life. “Light of the World” The flame of the candle is lit from the Easter candle. Easter Candle = Christ the light of the world. Who may be baptized? Anyone who has not been baptized before Who may perform a Baptism? Usually a priest, bishop or deacon In the case of necessity any person , even someone who has not been baptized, can baptize another if she or he has the right intention.
