1.  Turn in your phones. If I see it or hear it, I am taking it for the whole day.  Your short answer take home quiz is due NOW. Turn it into the tray. If it’s not in by today, it’s minus 30 points.  Your expository essays are graded. To see your grade and my comments, sign on to the cloud and then search for google drive. Sign in. Then look for it under “shared with me,” it should just be a document titled with your name.

5.  Divide your index card into three sections by folding it like a brochure. You can title the front side “Summary Sentences.”  Then label each column, leaving room to write a ONE SENTENCE SUMMARY for each section of the text. Paragraphs 1-7Paragraphs 8-16Paragraphs 17-20

6.  After you have written your summary sentences and confirm with a partner, write notes on the back of your card regarding these three topics: List the lessons the father gives to the son. Use adjectives to describe Mahfouz’s school life. Describe feelings or emotions the narrator experiences in response to the changes of the world.

7.  Think about the following quote:  “Great works never fail to reveal the common human experience.”  How does Mahfouz’s work reveal this? Use two quotes from the story to back up your claim.  Remember to consider archetypes and the universal unconscious.
