Consultation 2014-2015

Before the clinic… Have your materials ready! Consultation binder (BMI & Blood Pressure Charts) Nutrition Presentation Board RecipesNewsletters Writing materials Water bottle (you will be talking A LOT so stay hydrated!!)

First things first: Establish a relationship You are the face of the clinic- you provide the main source of information and help in the clinic! When the patient arrives…SMILE! When the patient arrives…SMILE! Don’t immediately look at their paper, first ask about their day/how they’re doing! Cómo se siente hoy? Greet them by name/ask for their name Ask them what THEIR concerns are about their health We want them to trust us because WE will be the ones giving them advice so we need them to listen We want them to trust us because WE will be the ones giving them advice so we need them to listen

BMI Es una indicación de su peso en relación a su estatura Es una indicación de su peso en relación a su estatura Su número indica que….______________show them where they are at on the chart (make sure to use proper units) Su número indica que….______________show them where they are at on the chart (make sure to use proper units) If they are under/over their “healthy range” of BMI, show them what weight they should be at for their height If they are under/over their “healthy range” of BMI, show them what weight they should be at for their height Steps to take: Steps to take: If they are Over/Under BMI: Ask for their diet, do they exercise regularly, medical conditions….assess and give advice accordingly (will be covered in later slide) If they are Over/Under BMI: Ask for their diet, do they exercise regularly, medical conditions….assess and give advice accordingly (will be covered in later slide) If they have a healthy BMI: Still ask for their lifestyle, weight is not always indicative of health (congratulate them for what they are doing right, and give advice on possible changes for what can be improved upon If they have a healthy BMI: Still ask for their lifestyle, weight is not always indicative of health (congratulate them for what they are doing right, and give advice on possible changes for what can be improved upon

Blood Pressure La presión arterial mide como esta trabajando su corazón y como circula la sangre por su cuerpo El corazón es un musculo que esta trabajando constantemente, entonces es importante mantener su presión arterial para no causar daño a su corazón Ask them if they have ever had issues/seen a doctor regarding their blood pressure (medication, etc.) Show them where their blood pressure lies on the chart Low blood pressure: can indicate their heart isn’t able to pump blood as efficiently High blood pressure: their heart is overworking to circulate blood Assess and advice (to be covered later)

Heart Rate Su pulso enseña como esta trabajando su corazón en la circulación de su sangre (latidos por minuto) 70-100 BPM is normal Low pulse: ask if they exercise regularly (as athletes tend to have a naturally lower heart rate) High pulse: Have they been walking a lot today? Under stress? Usually is situational and not issue-based

Nutrition (use the presentation board!) Ask them about their diet! Specifically in relation to tortillas, soda, coffee, rice, manteca (aceite), and red meat Tortillas (pan)- How many? Max of 3 a day! Let them know that it is OKAY to eat tortillas/bread BUT that it needs to be done in moderation (too many or too much can cause weight gain which is dangerous for their heart health and bone strength) Tortillas/bread have a high fat content so it can cause cardiac issues in the long run Advice: Eat less bread/tortillas and try substituting them for the wheat options which contain less fat, are easier to digest, and whole grains can give you more energy!

Exercise Ask them how often they exercise What do they consider exercise? Let them know that being active doesn’t necessarily mean the GYM but can be any type of physical activity Walking, running, playing with their kids, Zumba, etc. Start with at least 20-30 minutes of consecutive exercise (being sore is natural, preparation for your body) Strengthens your heart, muscles, bones, etc. Necessary to keep a balance between energy and food (exercise will give you more energy, and endorphins(many patients are stressed, depressed, etc.)!)

Wrap it Up Review the information one last time (specific numbers and what they indicate) Set an attainable goal with them (something we can assess at the next clinic: weight loss, exercise change, diet change, etc.) Let them know what steps to take in the next two weeks (health is process, not an immediate result…be realistic!) Make them feel accountable (we will see them at next clinic to see their progress)- Let them know that we care! Make them feel accountable (we will see them at next clinic to see their progress)- Let them know that we care! Vitamins: Meant to supplement their diet, not replace it! Give them directions on how to take them. HAVE A GOOD DAY, WE WILL SEE YOU IN 2 WEEKS AND ARE EXCITED ABOUT YOUR CHANGES!

Additional information Always stay positive! Be encouraging, helpful, and considerate. NEVER look down on what they are doing wrong- establish rapport with them and let them know it’s never too late to make a positive change! The changes they make now will be seen later in life! John Wooden- Be quick, but do not hurry. (be calm, be time efficient but make them feel important) Remember: WE ARE NOT DOCTORS. (We can give advice, help assess, but NOT diagnose) Possible questions: Insulin, Pregnancy, Mental health, Diabetes
