WARM UP 1/20 1. How many bones do we have in our body?
2. How many in our head? 3. Name as many bones as you know.
2
Ch. 7 : 1/30 Intro to BONES: skull
3
206 total bones in the adult body
Children – around 450 * due to some bones not yet fused EX: - wrist - ankle - pelvis - skull
4
CHILD’s SKULL Fontanels – areas where the major skull bones have not fused together yet AKA “soft spots” Purpose: so skull can be flexible for birth (solid after about 18 months)
5
2 Major Skeletal regions:
1. AXIAL – head neck and torso (80) 2. APPENDICULAR – arms and legs (126)
6
AXIAL SKULL – 28 bones total Cranium (8) Face (14) Ear (6)
7
SKULL FEATURES SUTURES – immovable joints between skull bones
SINUS – cavity or space MEATUS – tube-shaped opening
8
FORAMEN – hole (for blood vessels)
* foramen magnum – hole at bottom of skull, where spinal cord attaches to brain. PROCESS – projection (sticking out)
