Sun as a Symbol The sun symbolizes the following: It is the center of being and intuition Knowledge, warmth, glory, splendor Vitality, passion, courage The Universal Father

The Universal Father The father is the sun. It represents the conventional forces of law and order. The sun is usually regarded as superior in terms of physical, mental, and spiritual aspects. Sun is the Father Time. It is the Heavenly Father. It signifies the world of ethical laws.

Examples of Sun “Such an interview, perhaps, would have been more terrible than even to meet him as she now did, with the hot, midday sun burning down upon her face, and lighting up its shame…that should have been seen only in the quiet gleam of the fireside…” ch. 3 Sun is revealing shame and secrets Secrets should have been kept in the dark

More Examples of Sun “There he stood, with a border of grizzled locks beneath his skull-cap; while his gray eyes, accustomed to the shaded light of his study, were winking like those of Hester’s infant, in the unadulterated sunshine.” ch. 3 Sunshine is innocent and it does not hide anything The sun exposes the truth

Examples Continued… “‘Mother,’ said Pearl, ‘the sunshine does not love you. It runs away and hides itself, because it is afraid of something on your bosom…I am a child. It will not flee from me.’” ch. 16 The sun hides from unethical behavior It is innocent and true like a child (Pearl)

Example of Sun “All at once, as with a sudden smile of heaven, forth burst the sunshine, pouring a very flood into the obscure forest, gladdening each green leaf, transmuting the yellow fallen ones to gold.” ch. 18 It brightens the forest Makes everything clear and golden

Moon as a Symbol The moon symbolizes the following: The feminine symbol, Mother Immortality & intuition Middle ground between the light of the sun and the darkness of the night In Astrology: the moon is the symbol of the soul In Horoscope: it determines the subject’s capacity for reflection and adaptation It represents the stages of human development

Mother Moon Model feminine symbolizing all of the following: Phases of life Fertility Eternal renewal and rebirth Protection Shelter Warmth Nourishment

Symbol of Night Night symbolizes the following: Obscurity & mystery of darkness Moon and its singular eye Ignorance The unconscious and hidden potential The moon is represented by the goddess Nyx

The Goddess Nyx The goddess Nyx represents the moon. She is the Mother of the following: Sleep Dreams Death

Examples of Night “He kept vigils, likewise, night after night, sometimes in utter darkness.” ch.11 Praying in secrecy The darkness was covering his actions

More Examples “He felt his limbs growing stiff with the unaccustomed chilliness of the night, and doubted whether he should be able to descend the steps of the scaffold. Morning would break, and find him there.” ch. 12 No one could find him at night Morning would reveal him and his secrets.
