7 GRASP Lathe Basics Purpose: To rotate a part against a tool whose position it controls Useful for fabricating parts and/or features that have a circular cross section

8 GRASP Lathe Basics Main Power On/Off Spindle Speed Spindle Rotation Forward/Reverse Spindle Lathe Chuck Spindle: Part of lathe that rotates Workholding attachments held in spindle - three jaw chucks, collets, and centers

9 GRASP Lathe Basics Quick Change Tool Holder x y (Axis of rotation) Move the CROSS SLIDE along the X-axis Move the SADDLE along the y-axis Tailstock Tailstock: supports end of the workpiece, or hold tools for drilling, reaming, threading, or cutting tapers. Carriage: controls and supports the cutting tool Saddle: mates with and slides along the ways. Cross slide: controls transverse motion of the tool A tool compound that allows angular tool movement.
