1 Planer Safety in the Lab Description The Ridgid TP1300 Planer can plane stock up to 13 inches wide and 6 inches thick. It has a powerful 15amp motor (with overload protection) with a maximum depth of cut of 1/8". The planer has a very substantial feel to it and sits atop an included stand but can also be used without the stand. It's two knife cutter head delivers 66 cuts per inch and moves material through at a rapid 26 feet per minute.

2 Essential Elements and Controls In Use The thickness is controlled via a crank wheel on the side of the machine. When the thickness is adjusted on the TP1300 the head moves keeping the planer tables stationary. The cutter head is lockable via a lever located on the right side. This keeps the cutter head from moving under load and causing a big snipe on the work piece ("snipe" is the term used to describe the reduced thickness areas usually found on the infeed and outfeed ends of a board that has been run through a planer. This was a common problem on early planers). One of the advanced features of the planer is a depth stop located on the right hand side. Once the operator sets the desired thickness, the cutter cannot be lowered more than this setting. (1/8" to 1 3/4" in 8 increments)

5 Lab Safety for the Planer Use industrial quality eye protection, ear protectors, and footwear. Keep the work area around the planer free from scraps, sawdust, oil or grease. Before starting the planer, clear the machine and table area of chips, tools, or other matter. Keep hands away from any moving parts. Never look around, carry on a conversation, or “horseplay” while using the planer. Use a helper or a support stand to tail off the lumber when planing. A person tailing off only supports and moves with the stock as it comes through the planer.

6 Lab Safety for the Planer Make certain all guards are in place and securely fastened. Never stand or walk directly behind the machine when it is in operation. Do not overload the planer by trying to cut more than the capacity of the machine. The depth of cut will depend upon the width of the lumber, rate of feed and the kind of lumber. The depth of cut should never be set at more than 1/16 inch. Disconnect the electrical service in the circuit breaker before making any service adjustments to the planer or before changing blades. Remove jewelry such as finger rings, bracelets, and watches. These items have the potential to get caught in the machine or on the material while planing.

7 Lab Safety for the Planer When feeding material into the machine, stand to the side nearest the switch. Never stand behind a piece of lumber being planed, as kickbacks can cause serious injury. If the planer becomes overloaded during the cut stop the machine, wait until the cutter head completely stops, then lower the table to clear the work. Kickbacks may occur if the stock is removed from the planer before the cutter head stops. Never force material through the planer. If the lumber does not feed properly, stop the machine and have the instructor help you correct the feed problem. Make sure the board to be planed is free of knots, paint, varnish, nails, dirt, and grease. Feed lumber into the planer with the grain of the wood.

8 Lab Safety for the Planer Never attempt to surface lumber that is shorter than 12”. Never plane lumber less then 1/2” thick unless a backing board of ¾” is used. Check for thickness, back off ½ turn, then ¼ turn per pass. Feed only one board through the planer at a time. Kickbacks can occur while attempting to surface more than one board at a time. Pass lumber around the planer, not over it, when running lumber through the planer a second time.
