2 ENGR-103 - F RESHMAN D ESIGN Runs duration of Spring quarter (10 weeks) 3-5 students per group Groups are expected to Define their project (generally based on section theme) Determine the objectives, constraints, and tasks Develop a reasonable 10 week work plan Produce a concrete deliverable – not just a report 2

3 D EFINING D ESIGN P ROJECTS If you have your own project idea, you must Get the project approved prior to the start of Spring term Find an advisor willing to advise your group Submit an Externally Advised Project form Otherwise Each ENGR-103 lab section will have a project associated with it Registering for a given lab section will require that you participate in its associated project 3

4 F RESHMAN D ESIGN D ELIVERABLES All projects are expected to result in a tangible deliverable. This is dependent on the type of project, e.g. A completed program, app, or game for a software based project A functioning mechanism for a robotics based project A detailed study for an environmental engineering project You are expected to define a reasonable set of deliverables and meet them. “Report only” projects will not be approved 4

5 F RESHMAN D ESIGN R EGISTRATION Prior to the opening of Spring registration, we will publish a list of lab sections and their associated projects All group members must be registered to the same lab section Signed Externally Advised Project forms must be submitted by Monday of Week 9 Students in externally advised groups will register to a specific lab section 5

6 D ESIGN OF A M ANUAL T RANSMISSION A gearbox with changeable gear ratio The gears were designed in CREO and 3D printed A text rig build on a Lego frame was used to measure performance. 6

7 W EARABLE LED L IGHT FOR P HOTO - D YNAMIC T HERAPY The goal of this project was to create a bandage that can be used for PDT (photodynamic therapy). 7

8 S ECRET D OOR U NLOCKER 8 When someone knocks with the correct sequence, the door opens itself Uses an Arduino and custom electronics

9 H OUSEHOLD RECYCLE : SEPARATING, SORTING AND PROCESSING Separates bottles based on color. Built upon the NXT and its color sensor. 9

15 F USED D EPOSITION M ODELING (FDM) A thin bead of plastic is extruded through a heated nozzle and deposits a pattern one later at a time. Layer thickness ranges from 7 mils to 13 mils Materials include ABS, acrylic, and other thermoplastics 15

16 F USED D EPOSITION M ODELING (FDM) The Drexel CoE has two FDM printers Dimension SST 1200es – 12” x 12” x 10” envelop Dimension uPrint – 8” x 6” x 6” envelop The machines can be used by students during Freshman Design 16

17 L ASER C UTTER ( ON ORDER ) Cuts and engraves sheet stock of up to 18” x 24” size ABS, acetal, wood, acrylic Does not cut PVC, PTFE, and a few other plastics Does not cut metal 60 watt laser Up to 3/8” thick acrylic 17
