Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance John Zamora

Questions What is Zen? What is Buddhism? What does either one of them have to do with motorcycle Maintenance ?

Zen Zen: Meditation Zen: Belief that enlightenment can be attained through meditation, self- contemplation, and intuition rather than through faith and devotion Zen is Now Zen is nothing VIDEO

Example “These roads are truly different from the main ones. The whole pace of life and personality of the people who live along them are different. They’re not going anywhere. They’re not too busy to be courteous. The hereness and nowness of things is something they all know about” (Pirsig 5). “Unless you’re fond of hollering you don’t make great conversation on a running motorcycle. Instead you spend your time being aware of things and meditating on them” (Pirsig 7).

What is your zen moment?

Buddhism The teaching of Buddha that life is permeated with suffering caused by desire, that suffering ceases when desire ceases, and that enlightenment obtained through right conduct, wisdom, and meditation releases one from desire, suffering, and rebirth.

What does this have to do with Motorcycle Maintenance John - fights technology and rather take his bike to a mechanic Narrator - who finds peace working his own bike John focuses on what told to him (through an instruction booklet) Narrator becomes one with the bike and tries to be in the moment

Which side are you on?

“They feel that technology has got to do with the forces that are trying to turn them into mass people and the don’t like it.” How?

Technology In a quick paced high tech world, can we find zen? Are we better as a society because of our technological devices/ advances Does the social status of technology and the uses of technology contradict the possibility of zen and technology Is it possible to have a zen state while connected to technology?

“The scientific point of view has wiped out every other point of view where they seem primitive…” Do you agree? How does this relate to our future? What will a Zen moment be for future generations?

“We were all spectators. And it occurred to me there is no manual that deal with the REAL business of motorcycle maintenance, the most important aspect of all. Caring about what you are doing is considered unimportant or taken for granted”

“The Buddha, the Godhead, resides quite as comfortably in the circuits of a digital computer or the gears of a cycle transmission as he does at the top of a mountain or in the petal of a flower. To think otherwise is demean the buddha - which is to demean oneself.”
