1. Jakarta The capital and the largest city of Indonesia.

2. About Jakarta  Jakarta is located on the northwest coast of the island of Java.  It has an area of 650 km² and a population of 8.3 million (as of 2000).  Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state.

3. History of Jakarta  By the 12th century, it was a major port for the Hindu kingdom of Sunda. The Portuguese were reported to be the first Europeans to visit the port of Kalapa. A Hindu king granted Portuguese traders permission to build a fort at Kalapa in the early 16th century. Jakarta's port is still called Sunda Kelapa today, after this early settlement.

4. Historical Features  The Monumen Nasional (Monas) is a 137m tall tower in Central Jakarta, symbolizing the fight for Indonesia's Independence. Its construction began in 1961 under Sukarno and not finished until 1975 under Suharto. It's topped by a 14.5 tonnes of flame-shaped bronze plated in 35kg of gold.

5. Social Demographic  The population has sharply risen from 2.7 million in 1960 to 8.3 million in 2000. Jakarta suffers from major urbanization problems.  Population below poverty line 27% (1999).  Male: 92.5% and female: 83.4% (2002) of the populations.

7. Transportation  Jakarta's transportation depends on toll roads, railways, and monorails tracks.  Buses and transport cars (local language: Angkot, angkutan kota) are also popular. Like trains, they also become overloaded during peak hours.

8. Climate in Jakarta  Jakarta has a pleasant tropical climate most of the year, with gentle breezes. Jakarta is equatorial (located in the equator line) the temperature is about 28° - 35° C.  From late October to April, there is usually a rain shower everyday.

12. Traditional Dance  Yapong also was composed by Bagong Kussudiardjo in 1970. Yapong is based on Betawi (Jakartanese) traditional style female dance. The music is very lively. It is a combination of a new Javanese melodic gamelan style with a rock beat.

14. Recreational Place  The amusement park kind of like Disneyland. Beside Dufan acronym of Dunia Fantasi (Fantasy World), this is the only recreational park in Indonesia that located in Jakarta.

15. Primary Occupation  The primary occupation in Jakarta depends on the social classes. The upper class’ jobs are mostly in the office building with Air- conditioner compared to the lower class jobs that really don’t have a proper work place such as selling a “clean water”.

18. My Opinion about Jakarta!  For me, Jakarta is an interesting and unique city. However, I don’t have any desire to live there because of the safety issues, the pollutions and the job security. Therefore, I will visit Jakarta for vacation and shopping that’s for sure.
