Ernesto Guevara de la Serna was born on June 14, 1928 in Rosario, one of the most important cities in Argentina. His family had aristocratic roots but socialistic ideas. It was a wealthy upper-middle class family. His father was a construction engineer. Ernesto was the first of five children.

He starts studying medicine at the University of Buenos Aires in 1948. In 1951 he takes off on a motorcycle journey with his friend Alberto. They travel from Buenos Aires down the coast of Argentina, through the Andes into Chile, and then north into Peru, Columbia and Venezuela. The diary Che kept during this time has been published as: “The Motorcycle Diaries: A Journey Around South America”

He qualifies as Dr. in 1953, and in 1954 he moves to Mexico City finding work in the General Hospital. Through Hilda Gadea, a Peruvian Marxist, he meets Fidel Castro and involves himself in the planned invasion of Cuba. In 1955 he gets married to Gadea and has a daughter, Hildita.

Under the influence of Castro, and the writings of Mao Tse-Tung, he begins to form the primary ideas of his philosophy of guerrilla warfare. In this time he also began to be called “CHE” for his habit of ending his sentences and calling his friends “che” which is an Argentinean expression for buddy.

In 1956, Che begins the revolutionary war against the dictator, Fulgencio Batista. He becomes the Commandate of the Revolutionary Army of Barbutos. The revolution succeeded, Batista was overthrown, and Che becomes the Governor of the National Bank. Che Guevara and Fidel Castro

In 1959 he gets a divorce and marries Aleida March de la Torre. He has four children.

Che Guevara’s portrait on the Cuban 3 peso note In 1961 he becomes Minister of Industry, and from 1961 to 1965 travels around the world with his wife as ambassador for Cuba.

In the following years Castro disagrees with Che. They have different ideas about the future of Cuba. He goes to Bolivia and prepares a new revolution. On October 9, 1967, Che was murdered in the jungles of Bolivia, by order of the Bolivian government and the CIA. He was only 39 years old.

Assignment #1: Quotes In the computer lab, examine the following quotes from Che Guevara. Choose 2 quotes and explain them in the context of Che’s life. Research specific events surrounding the quote or that apply to the context of the quote. You should write 2-3 sentences per quote in an attempt to explain it.

Assignment #2: Interview Acting as a reporter for the New York Times, choose to interview either Fidel Castro or Che Guevara about their younger years leading up to the Cuban Revolution. Please refrain from covering anything past the actual Revolution in your interview. Develop a list of 5 questions (and answers) that will help you to connect their childhoods to the Revolution. Do NOT just choose random questions; develop questions and answers that contain important factual information regarding the Revolution. –YOU must attempt to make the connection between The Motorcycle Diaries and the Cuban Revolution.
