WRITER’S NOTEBOOK LESSON: RUN-ON/FUSED SENTENCES
2
IN YOUR WRITER’S NOTEBOOK… Title your notes, “ Lesson on Run-On Sentences” ; make sure you date it as well. Grandma still rides her Harley motorcycle her toy poodle balances in a basket between the handlebars. What is wrong with this sentence? Write: A run-on sentence is a sentence with two main clauses joined with no punctuation.
3
RUN-ON SENTENCE Fixes: Make two sentences: Grandma still rides her Harley motorcycle her toy poodle balances in a basket between the handlebars. A break should occur between motorcycle and her. To fix the problem with Strategy 1, you would revise the sentence like this: Grandma still rides her Harley motorcycle. Her toy poodle balances in a basket between the handlebars.

FIX #2 Strategy 2 —Use a comma and a coordinating conjunction. There are seven coordinating conjunctions.coordinating conjunctions F = for; A = and; N = nor; B = but; O = or; Y = yet; S = so FANBOYS Teamed up with a comma, these seven coordinating conjunctions can correctly join two main clauses. Take a look at our original example: Grandma still rides her Harley motorcycle her toy poodle balances in a basket between the handlebars. To fix the problem with Strategy 2, you should do this: Grandma still rides her Harley motorcycle and her toy poodle balances in a basket between the handlebars. You can’t just sub one in; it has to make sense!

FIX #3 Strategy 3 —Use a semicolon. A semicolon is a strong enough mark of punctuation to join two main clauses. Use a semicolon like this: A semicolon Grandma still rides her Harley motorcycle; her toy poodle balances in a basket between the handlebars. Keep these three things in mind when you use a semicolon: The two main clauses that the semicolon joins should be closely related in meaning. Don't capitalize the word that follows the semicolon unless that word is a proper noun, one that is always capitalized.proper noun Limit your use of semicolons; you should not scatter them throughout your writing.

EXAMPLES FROM YOUR WRITING Fix the following: We spend every minute together I’d say we should hold a record for being so close. My family they’re the ones who look out for me and they mean the world to me. We do things with them we are partners. My family is super important to me they play a huge role in my life. Some of the things I value are soccer and hockey, being at the lake for most of the summer, getting to go to school, getting to hang around with friends and family, having fresh water whenever I want and being able to have free time to do whatever I want to do.
