SAVeRS – Selection of Appropriate Vehicle Restraint Systems TRB, 14 January 2013 Objectives of SAVeRS practical and readily understandable Vehicle Restraint System (VRS) guidance document selection of the most appropriate solution in different road and traffic configurations for all types of VRS The objective of the SAVeRS project is to produce a practical and readily understandable Vehicle Restraint System (VRS) guidance document and a user-friendly web-based tool that will allow the selection of the most appropriate solution in different road and traffic configurations for all types of VRS : safety barriers including parapets, crash cushions (including truck- mounted attenuators), terminals and transitions, motorcycle protection devices.

SAVeRS – Selection of Appropriate Vehicle Restraint Systems TRB, 14 January 2013 The expected outcome The Guideline will be structured in 5 sections: Identification of the need for a VRS (barrier placement guidance): allow the user to identify if there is a need for a VRS and the LON; Safety barriers (including parapets): provide guidance for selecting the most appropriate VRS, which is tested according to EN1317-2 will be provided in different road section configurations. Crash cushions (including TMAs), terminals and transitions: this section of the guide allow to select the attenuators according to EN1317-3 and the Truck Mounted Attenuators (TMAs) for which a European Technical Specification is still under development and that are currently tested according to the US NCHRP350 or the UK Highways Agency’s TD49/07. Motorcycle restraint systems (MRS): this section of the guideline will provide a tool to identify where an MRS tested according to EN Technical Specification CEN/TS 1317-8 (“Road restraint systems Motorcycle road restraint systems which reduce the impact severity of motorcyclist collisions with safety barriers”) is required and the criteria to select the most appropriate MRS; Recommendation for the implementation of the guideline by National Road Administrations.

SAVeRS – Selection of Appropriate Vehicle Restraint Systems TRB, 14 January 2013 The expected outcome The applicability of the Guide will be tested in a Pilot Project by Balfour Beatty Major Civil Engineering The Guide will be implemented in a user-friendly web-based tool The selection criteria in the Guide will be based also on life cycle principles
