Acceleration Section 10.3
2
Defining Acceleration ► Acceleration is the rate of change in speed ► Equation: a = Δv Δt Δt which means a = v 2 – v 1 t 2 – t 1 t 2 – t 1 2 = final speed V2 = final speed V1 = initial speed t2 = final time t1 = initial time
3
Common Units a = Δv = m/s = m/s 2 Δt s Δt s Other Common Units: km/h s
4
Special Note ► If the answer is a positive number, there is an increase in speed ► If the answer is a negative number, there is a decrease in speed
5
Example 1 ► A motorcycle has a change in speed of 9.0 m/s over a period of 2.0 seconds. What is the acceleration of the motorcycle?
6
Ex 1 Answer Δv = 9.0 m/s Δt = 2.0 s a = ? a = Δv = 9.0 m/s = 4.5 m/s/s = 4.5 m/s 2 Δt 2.0 s Δt 2.0 s
7
Example 2 ► A car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.0 s. What is the acceleration?
8
Ex 2 Answer v 1 = 0 km/h v 2 = 100 km/h t 1 = 0 s t 2 = 6.0 s a = Δv = v 2 – v 1 Δt t 2 – t 1 a = 100 km/h – 0 km/h 6.0 s – 0 s = 100 km/h 6.0 s = 17 km/h/s
9
You try ► Santa Claus accelerates at a rate of 12m/s 2. If his sled is traveling initially at 100m/s, how long will it take him to accelerate to 160m/s?
