Do Now : How can Hamlet rationalize the death of Polonius? HW: Read Act 4, Scenes 1, 2, 3.

Hamlet begins by berating his mother. This scene has long been linked to Hamlet’s Oedipal Complex. Hamlet hesitates to kill Claudius and then walks into Gertrude’s bedroom. Why does Hamlet immediately jump to murder the “Claudius” behind the curtain? What is Hamlet’s reaction to killing Polonius? “Mother, you have my father much offended.”

Does Gertrude betray Hamlet or is she looking out for a son that she truly thinks is mad? What do you think? A Mother’s Love?

Claudius seems all to happy to be able to send Hamlet away. However, what nefarious plan does he reveal? (nefarious: wicked or criminal) A King’s Plan
