2 Greek Mythology Geek mythology is the body of myths and teachings that belongs to the ancient Greeks. It concerns with their gods and heroes, the nature of the world, and the origin and significance of their own cult and ritual practices.

3 The oldest known Greek literary sources , homer’s epic poem lliad and odyssey , focusing on Trojan war and its aftermath. Geometric designs on pottery of the eighth century BC depict scenes from the Trojan cycle as well as the adventures of Heracles Hercules is the Roman name for the Greek divine hero Heracles

4 The Greek Hero Heracles (or Hercules) is best known as the strongest of all mortals. Stronger than many gods. So strong he was the deciding factor in allowing the Olympians to win their battle with the giants. He was the last mortal son of Zeus. He is the only man born of mortal woman to become a god upon his death

5 The City Of Troy Troy was a city well-known to both history and legend and situated in northwest Anatolia in what is now Turkey, It is best known for being the setting of the Trojan War described in the Greek Epic Cycle and especially in the Iliad, one of the two epic poems attributed to Homer.

6 The Trojan War  The Trojan War was waged against the city of Troy by the Achaeans (Greeks) after Paris of Troy took Helen from her husband Menelaus king of Sparta.  Prince Hector of Troy and his brother Paris negotiate a peace treaty with Menelaus, king of Sparta, and celebrate the end of a long and bloody war. On the same night, Paris smuggles helen. Infuriated Menelaus travels to Mycenae wherein his elder brother Agamemnon is king and supreme commander of all the Greek forces, and asks him to go to war with him against Troy.

7 As the Greek armies are mobilized, King Nestor of Pylos convinces Agamemnon to also recruit Achilles. Achilles and the Myrmidons land first, taking the beach and ransacking the Temple of Apollo, capturing Hector and Paris' cousinBriseis Following day the Greeks march on Troy, and Paris challenges Menelaus to single combat, the winner taking Helen home to settle the conflict

8 Menelaus handily defeats the inexperienced Paris but is killed by an intervening Hector.
As Patroclus gets killed by Hector, Achilles seeks revenge of his cousin’s death. The next day, Achilles challenges Hector to single combat. The two appear evenly matched, but Achilles eventually defeats Hector and drags his body back to the Greek camp in a gesture of spite.

9 Odysseus plans to infiltrate the city by building a giant hollow wooden horse.
The Trojans take the horse for an offering to Poseidon for a safe voyage home, and assume victory, bringing the horse into the city. Massive celebrations ensue but that night, the Greeks within the Trojan Horse emerge and open the gates, admitting the rest of the army, which commences the Sack of Troy, destroying the city.

10 This destruction also brought about the death of Achilles at the hands of Paris when he is shot in his heels. Achilles accepts his death as revenge for killing Hector

11 Achilles death is adorned by a very famous quote from odyssey
“If they ever tell my story, let them say I walked with giants. Men rise and fall like the winter wheat, but these names will never die. Let them say I lived in the time of Hector, tamer of horses. Let them say, I lived, in the time of Achilles."
