When might you get …? - A bruise – a blue, brown or purple mark. - From a fall, being hit by somebody, or knocking against something - A blister – a swelling on the skin filled with liquid. - From walking a long way in uncomfortable shoes, or from wearing shoes that are too tight. - A rash – an area of red spots on the skin. - As an allergic reaction to something or with certain children’s illnesses like measels.

Why might you be given …? A plaster – a small piece of material which sticks to the skin To cover a cut which is not serious. A bandage – a strip of cloth wound around a part of the body. To protect a part of the body that has been hurt, or after a sprain. Antibiotics – a kind of medicine (e.g. penicillin) If you have a bacterial infection.

Why might you be given …? Stitches – a short piece of thread used with a needle to sew up a wound. For a deep cut or after an operation. An X-ray – a photograph which shows bones or organs in the body. To check if a bone is broken. A scan – a medical test in which a machine produces an image on a computer screen. If you are pregnant or to check muscles or internal organs.

When might you need to see …? Your GP – General Practitioner, i.e. a doctor who deals with general medical problems that don’t require a specialist. For any small problema, to get an appointment to see a specialist. A specialist – a doctor who is an expert in a field in particular. To get advice or treatment for a specific problem. A surgeon – a doctor who operates. If you need to have an operation.

What are the symptoms of …? A cold Sneezing, coughing, a runny nose. Flu Same as for a cold but also with a temperature and general aches and pains. Food poisoning Vomiting / being sick and diarrhoea.

What are the symptoms of …? A heart attack Chest pain, increased or irregular heart rate. Asthma Coughing, especially at night, difficulty breathing.

What might happen to you if you …? Had to stand for a long time in a hot crowded room? You might faint. Drank too much champagne. You might be sick, have a hangover. Were stung on your hand by a wasp. You might have an allergic reaction, get a rash, your hand might swell Switched on a light with wet hands. You might get an electric shock / get electrocuted
