2. Orthopedic Casts Purpose of a cast is to encase a limb to hold broken bones in place until they have had time to heal Orthopedic casts are commonly made from: –F–Fiberglass –P–Plaster

3. The Itch Factor A common complain about the cast is the itchy sensation one gets when using the cast for a prolonged period of time The itch is caused by the dryness of the user’s skin

4. The Problem The skin covered by the cast needs moisture in order to reduce the itchy sensation, but moisture in the cast introduces a few of it’s own problems Since the plaster of paris inside the cast softens as water is added, it weakens the structure of the cast Moisture inside the cast can also promote bacterial growth on the skin

5. The Solution To solve this problem, we will make small holes that run around the surface of the cast so that they protrude through half of the cast’s plaster layer The holes will then be coated with a liquid form of tarpaulin, a water resistant substance, and left to dry.

6. The Solution A thin, secondary layer of tarpaulin will be added to lock out moisture while allowing for cool air to circulate through the cast
