DRAFT, IN PREPARATION Public Health England (PHE) Went live on 1 April 2013. To champion the public’s health and work with partners so that collectively the population are: Protected against hazards to their health; Supported in enjoying good health at each stage of their life; and Able to access to the health services that best meet their needs. Organised into three patches Have embedded staff in NHS England Regional Director, Health Advisor to Mayor PHOF: Outcome 1: Increased healthy life expectancy Taking account of the health quality as well as the length of life (Note: This measure uses a self-reported health assessment, applied to life expectancy.) Outcome 2: Reduced differences in life expectancy and healthy life expectancy between communities Through greater improvements in more disadvantaged communities DOMAIN 1: Improving the wider determinants of health Objective: Improvements against wider factors that affect health and wellbeing, and health inequalities Domain 2: Health improvement Objective: People are helped to live healthy lifestyles, make healthy choices and reduce health inequalities DOMAIN 3: Health protection Objective: The population’s health is protected from major incidents and other threats, while reducing health inequalities DOMAIN 4: Healthcare public health and preventing premature mortality Objective: Reduced numbers of people living with preventable ill health and people dying prematurely, while reducing the gap between communities

Roles and responsibilities in VCS Engagement
DRAFT, IN PREPARATION Roles and responsibilities in VCS Engagement Local government to lead local engagement with VCS PHE London will support: Local Government LAs when they want to work supra Borough Develop insight with colleagues about how VCS helps to address social determinants of poor health PHE National will lead discussions with national VCS organisations as part of wider partnership and as public mediators The Regional Director of PHE London, Prof Yvonne Doyle, will act as professional health adviser to the Mayor of London and GLA to make sure they have the access to the best public health advice. Support a post within the GLA to help it take forward its own work on health improvement and tackling health inequalities. Work with partners on the emerging London Health Board, to identify joint priorities and help develop and deliver a joint work plan for 2013/14. Support the national and London-wide political scrutiny of the work of PHE and how well the public health function is working. Contribute to wider PHE work that champions the health of the population of England, addresses specific public health issues evident in the capital and showcases all that is good about London.

Priorities for Health and Wellbeing Boards
Early work looking at local Health and Well-being Boards’ priorities shows many selecting same themes: Improving mental wellbeing of adults and children Reducing obesity rates among children and adults Work focussed on long-term conditions Integration of health and care services Early intervention Other areas include tackling alcohol related issues, tobacco control, improving dementia care, cancer prevention and better service outcomes, reducing cardiovascular disease and increasing physical activity levels.

DRAFT, IN PREPARATION London Health Board The Board’s role is to provide leadership on health issues of pan-London significance, where this adds value to decisions, agreements and action at local level. The board will meet four times per year starting in May 2013 Membership is made up of three parts: five Leaders of London local authorities the Mayor and four Mayoral appointees five senior representatives from the Health Sector in the capital

DRAFT, IN PREPARATION London Health Board The Board has identified a number of priority areas to focus on: Making the case for investing in London’s health economy Promoting growth and jobs in London’s health & life sciences sectors Improving primary care Enhancing the patient experience, particularly through transparency of data and digital access to information Improving mental health services and well-being

DRAFT, IN PREPARATION Improve Mental Health & Wellbeing in London Identify areas where joint work amongst stakeholders would improve the mental health and wellbeing of Londoners. Develop a number of potential initiatives that could be taken forward under the umbrella of the London Health Board (LHB).
