E. Paliouras (DLR-DFD) & the PROMOTE consortium eleni.paliouras@dlr.de http://www.gse-promote.org 10 th EIONET Workshop Vilnius, Lithuania 18 October 2005 Provision of daily operational spatial air quality data from the ESA Project: PROMOTE

GSEs: Background ESA GMES contribution : GSE (GMES Service Element) –GMES-applicable capabilities in Europe already exist target operational & sustainable information services –focus mainly on services using Earth Observation sources draw on results obtained from present EO satellites and provide recommendations for future EO systems –GSEs start with a 20-month Consolidation Stage intended to evaluate a large set of candidate services –Full-fledged operational services for an Implementation Stage with funding of 3 years

GSE for Atmospheric Monitoring PROMOTE Mission: To deliver the Atmosphere GMES Service Element by constructing & delivering a sustainable & reliable operational service to support informed decisions in particular on atmospheric policy issues 4 themes selected based on identifiable user requirements and maturity or promise of satellite and ground-based observations –Stratospheric Ozone –Surface UV Radiation –Air Quality –Greenhouse Gases and Aerosols Project information and current product portfolio at: www.gse-promote.org

PROMOTE Core Users - AQ National Environmental Agencies –Austria (UBA) –France (ADEME) –Ireland (EPA) –The Netherlands (MNP) Regional & Local Environmental Agencies –Lombardia and Piemonte, Italy (ARPA) –Northrhein-Westfalia, Germany (LUA) –Île de France, France (AirParif) –London Borough of Croydon –Central Macedonia, Greece (RCM) Research Institutes –EMPA – Swiss Federal Lab for Material Testing and Research –INERIS – within French Ministry of Ecology –JRC – Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES) –NILU – Norwegian Institute for Air Research –VITO – Flemish Institute for Technological Research

Current Air Quality Services and Products Monitoring Products – Satellite based –Gas Retrievals - global Tropospheric NO 2 Total Column HCHO, CO, SO 2 –Aerosol Services – global and regional Aerosol Optical Depth and Aerosol Type indicator Sahara dust indicator Forecasting/Analysis Products @ various spatial scales –State of near-surface air quality –Forecast of near-surface air quality

Current Air Quality Services and Products Monitoring Products – Satellite based –Gas Retrievals - global Tropospheric NO 2 Total Column HCHO, CO, SO 2 –Aerosol Services – global and regional Aerosol Optical Depth and Aerosol Type indicator Sahara dust indicator Forecasting/Analysis Products @ various spatial scales –State of near-surface air quality –Forecast of near-surface air quality

Gas Retrievals: Tropospheric NO 2 Global coverage - GOME and SCIAMACHY sensors Target Uses –Trend analysis via monthly or annual means –Model input via NRT information Three algorithms being considered and compared with some degree of complementarity: –IUPB Limb/nadirBased on the limb/nadir matching technique (tropospheric slant columns are directly measured) –KNMI/BIRA TM4Global product (GOME, SCIA, OMI) –DLR ROSE/EURADRegional product = optimized accuracy for Europe (SCIAMACHY, GOME)

Gas Retrievals: Tropospheric NO 2

Current Air Quality Services and Products Monitoring Products – Satellite based –Gas Retrievals - global Tropospheric NO 2 Total Column HCHO, CO, SO 2 –Aerosol Services – global and regional Aerosol Optical Depth and Aerosol Type indicator Sahara dust indicator Forecasting/Analysis Products @ various spatial scales –State of near-surface air quality –Forecast of near-surface air quality

Aerosol Optical Thickness and Type Various services being tested including global and local coverages Retrievals from daily acquisitions of multiple sensors –Synergistically from GOME/ATSR-2 or SCIAMACHY/AATSR –AATSR alone –MERIS –MODIS Target Uses –Global coverage and climatologies for monitoring –NRT retrievals over Europe as input to AQ models

Aerosol Optical Depth (AATSR) Spatial resolution: 10x10 km 2, 1x1 km 2 on request Validation vs collocated AERONET sites

Current Air Quality Services and Products Monitoring Products – Satellite based –Gas Retrievals - global Tropospheric NO 2 Total Column HCHO, CO, SO 2 –Aerosol Services – global and regional Aerosol Optical Depth and Aerosol Type indicator Sahara dust indicator Forecasting/Analysis Products @ various spatial scales –State of near-surface air quality –Forecast of near-surface air quality

Near-Surface Air Quality Provide indicators of near-recent, current, and forecasted states of air quality at the surface using models, ground data and satellite data Operational systems at regional scale –Prev’Air –EURAD provides analyzed maps of near-surface levels of: O 3, NO 2, PM10, SO 2, CO based on assimilation of ground observations Operational systems at local and urban scales –SE Mediterranean –SE France based on CHIMERE model –Greater London Area, based on ADMS Urban, called YourAir

Forecasting of Near-Surface Air Quality Provide up to 4-day forecasts of ground level air quality using models in combination with ground & satellite data Three geographical scales using several modeling systems –Hemispheric/Continental –Regional (National and trans-national) –Local (City-scale) Assimilation of ground and satellite-based data is undergoing investigation within as well as outside PROMOTE –Availability of ground-based data in near-real time across Europe is limited –a European-wide strategy to foster increased availability would be welcomed

Summary PROMOTE is one of the major ESA GMES initiatives –only one related to atmosphere Finishing Consolidation Stage – formulating plans for Implementation Stage –looking for partner organizations interested in using results of spatial modeling of air quality requires availability of near-real time ground data Availability of ground-based data, such as AirBase, very useful for verification of current systems Availability of NRT ground-based data critical for improved forecasts at higher spatial resolution
