Earthquake Safety In Schools Brought to you by: Austin Emilie Claire Garrett & Tim
2
This is what devastating effects earthquakes have.
3
Earthquake Caused Deaths Around The World 0 2001, Sumatra, Indonesia (9.1) 224,400 deaths 0 2005, Pakistan (7.6) 86,000 deaths 0 2008, Sichuan, China (7.9) 87,587 deaths 0 2010, Chile (8.8) 525 deaths 0 2010, Haiti (7.0) 316,000 deaths 0 2011, Japan (9.0) 20,896 deaths
4
Our plan: 0 The number one cause of death during earthquakes is from collapsing buildings. 0 Our plan is to use base isolation systems to minimize the effects earthquakes have on buildings 0 We are specifically targeting schools 0 The building would protect from the main earthquake as well as any aftershocks 0 These buildings also act as a safe house for students to go to before the tsunami’s hit in coastal areas like japan.
5
Materials and Cost 0 Materials: 0 Base isolators 0 Reinforced concrete 0 Aluminum chunks 0 wood 0 Pipes 0 Water tanks 0 Oven 0 Freezer 0 Chests 0 Lights Cost: $4,480 $1,508,000 $83,580 $2,645.72 $500,000 TOTAL=2,098,705.72
6
About Base Isolation Base isolation uses bearing pads between the building and the foundation to allow the building to move with the earth during an earthquake. It costs about $140 per meter squared of isolation bearings. The base isolators for our project would cost $4480.
7
0 We researched the main use of base isolation and noticed that it is only used in large main buildings. Such as city halls and other government buildings. 0 Our goal is to make a safe refuge for schools during and after earthquakes
