4 In Romania, the cinema appeared on 1896. In May of this year, the first film screenings took place, in the editorial offices of the French newspaper “L'Independance Roumaine”. Called “the miracle of the century”, the first high-life performance, one of the first short films of Auguste and Louis Lumière, lasted 50 seconds: L'Arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat (town in France, which is part of the crowded city of Marseille). In the coming months and in other cities (Iai, Brăila, Galai, Craiova), film projections showed a significantly successful Romanian audience, being made ​​ by French professional (Louis Janin, Charles Delattre, brothers Bonheur). In May 1897, they produced the first Romanian news film, namely the filming done in Romania, by the Lumière company’s optician and French photographer Paul Menu, between May 10-June 20, 1897. 10 In September 1911, he made ​​ the first Romanian film “Amor Fatal”, a sentimental drama, a film that marked the beginning of a period of effervescence in Romanian cinema. On the 1 st of September, 1912, Bucharest host the historic premiere of “Romania's Independence”, the most significant achievement in the first era of Romanian cinema, a film which has been distributed in Transylvania, Austria, Hungary, France and Russia. The greatest merit of the film is that by using 80,000 extras, some of which even veterans from the War of Independence (1877-1878), it resulted a great quality movie, recognized as such by the French press, comparable at that time with the films of Giovanni Pastrone or later, in Romania, with historical the film of Sergiu Nicolaescu. Interesting is the fact that it was one of the first films in the world where a sovereign could be seen as a character, so Charles I (first king of Romania from 1866 to 1914), provided financial support for the film.

After the war, on the basis of over 80 news films created, especially during the campaigns of 1917 and the 1919, documentary productions were performed to support the fallen heroes and to remember the crucial moments which lead to the formation of Greater Romania : - June 1921 - Bucharest host the premiere of “Ecaterina Teodoroiu” - a documentary reconstruction of historical events, whose authenticity is enhanced by integrating excerpts from newsreels. - in 1923 “The story of the Romanian people”. The animated cartoons date from the 1920s, through the works of Romanian animation pioneers Aurel Petrescu and Marin Iordache, the authors of films such as: ”Păcală on the Moon” and “Păcală, in love”. In 1927, with a Charles Urban & Co video camera., purchased from A. Petrescu, M. Iordache creates “Haplea”, the first Romanian cartoon, preserved for posterity, based on character he had introduced in the humorous comics.
