Dealing with Dissent / Foul Language Depending on Severity Options of quiet word / ceremonial word Powers in Law to –Caution for Dissent –Send off for Offensive, Insulting or Abusive Language Doing Nothing means it is acceptable

Minimising Dissent Give strong confident decisions Bear in mind natural reactions, but do not ignore it Caution –Persistent dissent –Aggressive dissent If abusive language is used then this becomes a sending off offence

Offensive / Insulting / Abusive Language Not just swear words Bear in mind natural reactions, but do not ignore it Stronger action when players are insulting / abusive to each other Definite dismissal for –Abusive language towards a referee / assistant –Racial abuse towards anyone Remember you cannot caution for foul language

Summary Your Control depends on how well you deal with language problems Ignoring bad language leads to a ‘rising tide’ of dissent / foul language Take appropriate action Remember to include actual words in any report
