“The American Heritage Dictionary “ “The American Heritage Dictionary “ There is no single, universally accepted standard for how to speak or write American English; The term “Standard American English” is highly elastic and variable; What counts as Standard English depends on the locality and the particular varieties it is contrasted with;

What is called “Standard Speech “ ? What is called “Standard Speech “ ? The unaccented variety that is often called “Standard American” or “Standard Speech” is an idealized dialect; It is not spoken anywhere in America, but instead it is acquired through professional training; “Standard Speech” is based on PR ( British pronunciation Reduction), which was adopted with American alterations by the linguist William Tilly, at the beginning of the 20 th century; These alterations where loosely based on the speech of the North Eastern well educated and well traveled people;

There are innumerable ways to pronounce English in existence ( the variety of English spoken in the nation’s Midland areas is considered as sounding most neutral- it is often identified as “vox media” or the speech of broadcasters) School systems, professional communicators, businesses…, all have standards; The rules ( at least for grammar ) do not vary much from place to place;

Does it make sense to have a universal standard for American English? Although American English is used worldwide, the United States has no official Department of Language, unlike other nations.
