2. ICEL Pentecost Sunday Pentecost comes 50 days after Easter. Today we celebrate the coming of God ’ s Spirit to the Church. We reflect on the Third Person of Deity (i.e. the Holy Spirit)

ICEL Scripture text: 5 “ Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, ‘ Where are you going? ’ 6Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. 7But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counsellor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: John 16:5-15 (1)

ICEL Scripture text: 1In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach 2until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. 3After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. Acts 1:1-5, 9 (1)

ICEL Scripture text: 4On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “ Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. ” 9After he said this, he was taken up before their eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. Acts 1:1-5, 9 (2)

10. ICEL Waiting The disciples saw Jesus for 40 days. Would the Kingdom come now? No, but Jesus promised a gift – a Person.

ICEL Scripture text: 1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They say what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 2:1-13 (1)

ICEL Scripture text: 5Now there were staying in Jerusalem God- fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7Utterly amazed, they asked: “ Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? 9Parthians, Medes and Elamities; residents of Acts 2:1-13 (2)

ICEL Scripture text: Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontius and Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11(both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs – we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues! ” 12Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “ What does this mean? ” 13Some, however, made fun of them and said: “ They have had too much wine. ” Acts 2:1-13 (3)

14. ICEL The Promise Fulfilled The gift – of the Spirit – came as a surprise. Tongues of fire … God gave them the gift of languages.

15. ICEL Reversal of Babel A reversal of God ’ s dispersion of the nations Power to bear witness to God ’ s wondrous works To bring the gospel to the world

16. ICEL The Promise Lived How we live is so important today. We witness to the reign of God – i.e. the Kingdom. People see us. The Spirit wants to change us.

17. ICEL Scripture text: 16So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. 17For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. 18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law. 19The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; Galatians 5:16-26 (1)

18. ICEL Scripture text: 20idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control. Against such there is no law. Galatians 5:16-26 (2)

19. ICEL Scripture text: 24Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. Galatians 5:16-26 (3)

20. ICEL Making This Practical Crucify the sinful nature. Keep in step with the Spirit. Learn to listen to the Spirit ’ s gentle voice. Practice obeying the Spirit ’ s promptings. Take bold steps in the power of the Spirit to change your world.
