2 Starting point The Bible is God inspired. Written by human authors. Each with their own style. Written at specific points in history. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3v16-17

3 What does the passage actually say? Words Setting (when and where) Purpose Context Form (history, law, poetry, prophecy, letter etc.) What does the passage mean today? What is a similar situation today? A specific teaching about God etc.? Is there an example to follow, or a warning, or a promise? What actions need to be taken? What does the passage mean? What did it mean to the original readers? What is the main point or teaching? How does it compare to other passages? Can a general principle be extracted? 1. UNDERSTAND 2. EXPLAIN 3.
