Bylaws Changes 2009 Convention, St. Louis  Retain the current individual membership requirements Delegates, casting more than 1,400 ballots in a multiple-card vote, struck a proposal that would have opened membership to all who support AAUW’s mission and voted to insert passages from the 2007 Association Bylaws.

Bylaws Changes 2009 Convention, St. Louis  Retain the current individual membership requirements The eligibility requirement for AAUW membership is a graduate holding an associate or equivalent, baccalaureate or higher degree. (Same as 2007 Bylaws) Association Bylaws Committee will refine the amendment language to work with the rest of the proposals that were adopted.

6. Bylaws Changes 2009 Convention, St. Louis  Modify the partner membership requirements Partner member broadens the college/university membership category to include the possibility of allowing other institutions or organizations to join that meet the criteria set by the AAUW Board of Directors.

7. Bylaws Changes 2009 Convention, St. Louis  Abolish regions and allow informal interest groups or networks Branches and States are no longer part of a region. AAUW Board of Directors may establish informal geographic, issue, or special interest groups. Groups of members, branches, or states may form other affiliations to serve AAUW purposes.

8. Bylaws Changes 2009 Convention, St. Louis  Modify the number of directors-at-large Amendments increased the number of elected directors-at-large from 7 to 10, and reduced from 6 to 3 the appointed directors-at- large. The new board composition will go into effect for the 2011–13 biennium.

Bylaws Changes 2009 Convention, St. Louis  Adopt the “one member, one vote” proposal Each member may vote in person, electronically, or by mail on elections, amendments to public policy, resolutions, and bylaws. This method is in keeping with the grassroots nature of our organization and with a desire to allow everyone to participate. It also provides us vote timing flexibility.

11. Bylaws Changes 2009 Convention, St. Louis  Allow flexible structures for branches Branches must provide AAUW with contacts for administration and finance. Branches may create leadership structures that meet the needs of the branch. Branches may have as many or as few board members at they need.

12. Elections and Appointments AAUW Board of Directors  Jackie Littleton (Tyler Branch) was elected for a second term as an AAUW Director-at-Large  Kathy Anthon (Northeast Tarrant County Branch) was appointed as an AAUW Director-at-Large

13. Appointments Leadership Corps  Leadership Corps applications are now being accepted and are due August 31. AAUW no longer has regions or regional directors as of July 1, 2009. The new model is the Leadership Corps. The Leadership Corps will serve a similar but more service-intensive role than the regional directors. They will be a larger group (50 positions) and will have staff support and training.

14. Appointments AAUW Committees  Committee applications are due August 17. Committees for the 2009-11 biennium will be determined at the August 2, 2009 AAUW Board of Directors meeting.

15. MEMBERSHIP  A new category for student affiliates who are students at College/University Partners.  The e-student affiliates (E-SAF) pay no dues to AAUW and receive free access to AAUW information, research, and advocacy.  These students may actively participate in branch and state activities but must meet those dues requirements required for state and branch membership.

16. MEMBERSHIP  States and branches can begin registering E-SAFs September 1, 2009.  AAUW Texas will assess $1 in dues to E-SAFs.  Detailed information on which institutions are partners and how to register E-SAFs will be in the next the Link – Membership.

19. Donations to AAUW Donations to AAUW Funds (charitable programs) are tax- deductible. AAUW Funds support the:  P rotection of the legal rights of those facing discrimination – AAUW LAF, which includes Case Support, Plaintiff Travel and Education Grants, and Campus Outreach Projects.  E ducation of women for a lifetime of success – AAUW EF, which includes Fellows Alumni Initiative, Fellowships, and Grants and Awards. This includes the new Ann Richards American Fellowship, Fund 4324

20. Donations to AAUW  A dvocacy for the laws that are fair to women including AAUW Public Policy Impact Grants.  R esearch and recommendations about barriers that harm women is the Eleanor Roosevelt Fund.  L eadership and developing other women leaders – AAUW LTI, which includes National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL), Campus Action Projects, Campaign College, and $tart $mart. 21. Donations to AAUW  Checks should be written to AAUW Funds for tax-deductible contributions which include all AAUW charitable programs. You should designate a specific fund for your donation.  Checks should be written to AAUW Action Fund for supporting the 501(c)(4) Lobby Corps and the Congressional Voting Record and are NOT tax- deductible contributions.

24. Branch Actions  Branches need to send their Branch Officer lists with complete contact information to the AAUW Texas president as soon as possible.  Branches must modify their bylaws to conform with changes made at convention. Guidance will be available after the AAUW Bylaws are finalized. Note: Branches do not have to vote on the changes to bring their bylaws into conformity with AAUW.

25. Branch Actions  Branches should begin a dialogue about the new structure freedom and decide what is best for their branch. You don’t have to make any changes if everything is working for your branch.  “One member one vote” increases the importance for members to understand the issues before they vote and to vote.

26. AAUW Texas  AAUW Texas State Convention is April 23-25, 2010 in Houston, Texas.  Nominating Committee is accepting nominations for AAUW Texas Board of Directors.  AAUW Texas Bylaws Committee asks for proposals to modify Texas’ bylaws.

28. PEARL Awards  Protect Corpus Christi - Through our special interest group Community Outreach and in coordination with the YWCA, the Corpus Christi AAUW Branch developed a program designed to educate young women in college about employment discrimination.

30. PEARL Awards  Educate Northeast Tarrant County - Young Women’s Summit - This is a program designed to target young girls in high school. We provide workshops designed to encourage a second look at the possibilities for future education and rewards. Workshops include money awareness, what it is like in college and motivational speakers. 

32. PEARL Awards  Advocate AAUW Kerrville partners with the League of Women Voters Kerrville Area to foster local voter education and participation. Our joint project this year was to research, consolidate data and print/email a Directory of Elected Officials that documents contact information from President Obama to the school board of the smallest rural school in the five county area based on the results of the November, 2008 elections.

34. PEARL Awards  Research AAUW Tyler began administering a new scholarship this year that was designed to help single, working mothers gain a college education. AAUW research has shown that these women are the most likely to fall into poverty without the benefit of an advanced education to help them succeed in acquiring a job that will provide better financial security.
