3 “Philmont Scout Ranch is the Boy Scouts of America’s largest national high-adventure base. Its 34 staffed camps and 55 trail camps provide an unforgettable adventure in the high country along hundreds of miles of rugged, rocky tails.” Philmont hosted about 26,000 scouts over the summer of 2011 The property stretches over 215 square miles

12 The health lodge is responsible for providing health care to all boy scouts during their trek as well as over 1000 BSA employees Common chief complaints include musculoskeletal injuries, altitude sickness and gastroenteritis

13 Wilderness emergency medicine Training and experience similar to an emergency medical technician or paramedic Radio lingo Hiking, backpacking and other outdoor skills e.g., fly fishing and rock climbing Invaluable experience for returning as a 4 th year
