1 R. Henderson 4/25/2010 Lesson # 17 1 Gal 3:1-5 The Spirit is Received by Faith: Part 1 1 You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? 2 This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? 4 Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? 5 So then, does He who provides you with the Spirit and works miracles among you, do it by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?

9 Review of Galatians 3:1-2 * 3:1 - Foolish = not applying your minds, not understanding correctly - Bewitched = to mislead by charming someone (into false doctrine) - Jesus Christ portrait – detailed and clear - Where ? – before their very eyes - How ? – crucified – two aspects 1. Substitution – for the sins of the world 2. Identification – unto the sin nature 3:2 Paul’s Questions - To cause them to apply their minds (vs. being foolish continuously) - How did you receive the Holy Spirit – the one indwelling you ? 1. By the works of a law system ? 2. By the hearing of faith (faith hearing) ? Reason for the questions - Their Christian life was characterized by living according to a law system - But that is not the way they started the Christian life - They started the Christian life – by hearing of faith - They heard of God’s grace - They responded by faith There is no other way that man can please God or come to God – Heb. 11:6 The moment they responded by faith they received the Spirit – not by Law * Hal Molloy - 1994
