A: The Green Knight dares any of Arthur’s knights to exchange strokes with an ax. 3. How does Gawain’s description of himself reflect a knight’s code of chivalry? A: Sir Gawain is modest and loyal.

5 Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Review 4. For what does Gawain deserve to be requited (paid back)? A: Since he struck the Green Knight with an ax, Gawain must accept a similar blow. 5. Why do you think Gawain finally accepts the green sash? He thinks it might help protect him against the blow struck by the Green Knight. 6. At this moment, how do you think Gawain would explain the fact that he has received only a slight cut from the Green Knight’s ax? A: Gawain might explain it as a miracle, involving divine intervention, or possibly as magic.

A: The Knight reveals that out of respect for Gawain he “pulled his punches” (didn’t chop his head off). 8. What was the Green Knight’s test? A: The Knight sent his wife to test Gawain’s virtue. 9. What does Gawain mean when he says, “Foolish cowardice taught me... to bargain... and abandon my kind”? A: Gawain means that he was led to abandon the code of chivalry and knighthood. 10.Why do you think the Green Knight gives Gawain the sash? A: The Knight gives Gawain the sash to remind him of their struggle.
