4 What is a Forward Air Controller (FAC) ? Airborne controller: low, slow aircraft (O-1, O-2, OV-10) Controlled all air strikes when ground troops present –Identification of targets –Coordination with ground troops –Direct/control fighters –Bomb damage assessment Patrolled the Ho Chi Minh Trail for more than Six Years Among the Most Dangerous flying mission in Southeast Asia –3 Medals of Honor –25 Air Force Crosses –Numerous Silver Stars –Hundreds of Distinguished Flying Crosses –Thousands of Air Medals

5 Why the FAC Memorial? Honor our fellow brothers in arms Preserve the history and tradition of the FAC mission Part of the 2008 FAC Association Reunion To bring closure to the families of the lost FACs

6 FAC Memorial Design To be Built in Colorado Springs Memorial Park Will contain the names of 288 pilots and support staff who were killed in combat, including Army Special Forces and Marine Observers Special recognition of the three Medal of Honor recipients Misty FACs will have a separate monument on the pad Pad designed for future expansion Funded entirely by contributions from individuals, organizations and corporations that have an interest in the FAC mission Many “in kind” donations 501(c)3 Organization: Pikes Peak Community Foundation

If not for the FAC many more names would be inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Wall.

14 Memorial Dedication Ceremony 3 October 2008 Numerous Distinguished Visitors –Colonel Bud Day-guest speaker (Most highly decorated airman EVER) –Mayor Lionel Rivera, Colorado Springs Mayor –Possible CORONA attendance (schedule permitting) –The Adjutant General Colorado National Guard –Numerous retire 4 star generals Flyover (Colorado National Guard F-16s, O-1,O-2,OV-10, T-28, F-100 (?) Honor Guard Patriot Guard Riders AF Academy Band Fort Carson JTAC personnel (modern day “FACs”)

15 Remaining Financial Needs Total cost of Memorial and Dedication in excess of $65,000 –Have $16,000 “in-kind” donation from Ideal Concrete –Have received approx. $37,000 from FACs and friends Need additional funds for: –Dedication ceremony printing, loud speakers, chairs, etc. –Reception for families of deceased FACs –Speaker gifts –Fuel for FAC aircraft flyovers and some of owners’ costs –Editing /compiling/reproducing DVDs of event –Possible assistance for families of deceased
