The Journey for Sophomores. 9 th grade: Marked the transition to high school - focusing on academic and social skill development. 10 th grade: Focuses on career exploration, progress toward graduation and future academic planning. Career Education is required for high school graduation. Teachers and counselors provide information and experiences for students.

In Career Education, students research post high school opportunities. Speakers from various career areas as well as vocational/technical schools, the military and colleges/universities come to classes. Where is your student headed? TO THE NEXT LEVEL - POST SECONDARY PLANNING. Counselors will assist students with planning for high school graduation and preparing for their future after high school. Academic, personal/social and career information is provided.

Using the PLAN Test to chart your course.

PLAN Test information. PLAN shows strengths and weakness in English, Math, Reading and Science. PLAN shows whether students are on target for college. PLAN matches interests and careers. PLAN helps students prepare for the ACT. More information is available at www.planstudent.org.

PSAT/NMSQT An Indicator of College Readiness Saturday, October 13, 2012 Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test(PSAT). National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT). The PSAT is a practice test for the SAT. The Reasoning Test contains Critical Reading, Mathematics, and Writing Skills sections. Juniors that take the PSAT are eligible for National Merit Scholarship consideration.

Additional PSAT Information The PSAT will be given on Saturday, October 13, 2012. Students will receive information at the Fall junior meeting in September. Information will also be available on the LSW web site. Registration will occur at Southwest. The 2012 test fee will be $22.00 and could be subject to change. More information and practice questions are available at www.collegeboard.com

Know How to Go College Access Information Be a pain – in a good way. Push yourself and don’t stop. Find the right fit. Put your hands on some cash. More information is available at: KnowHow2GoNebraska.org www.educationquest.org

2012-2013 11 th Grade Registration Registration will be on line. The online registration window will be open in January. Please monitor the LSW website for further updates. Counselors will be available during a group registration session on January 24 th 2012 from 2:05 -3:30 pm ( PLC time) on a first come, first served basis. Planning Guide and registration information are available on the LSW web site home page at lsw.lps.org Please choose your classes wisely as your registration is a contract between you and our school. Late schedule changes will occur because of misplacements and failures.

2012 - 2013 Junior Timeline Summer: Begin collecting information on select and Ivy League colleges/ universities. 1 st Semester Early August : Junior Locker Check-out – no schedule changes will be processed - August 14 – First Day for Students in grades 10-12. September - Junior Family Meeting October 13 - PSAT October 21 – Lincoln Area College Fair.(tentative) November - College Financial Aid Meeting.

Check the Counseling Center ’ s website throughout the year for updated information. Mark important school activity dates in your planner or personal calendar.
