Welcome & Prayer Guidance Timeline Highlights: October 7 th – Mr. Walter will go into Religion to give students their current GPA, discuss the PLAN test, etc. October 10 th – College Fair at CLHS – in the Gym from 1:15 to 3:00 PM. October 16 th – PLAN Test for All Sophomores. Half day of school. November 11 th – College Financial Aid Information Night at 7:00 PM in the Library. December – Course Selections for 2014-2015 school year/2 nd semester schedules (may request changes until Dec. 14 th ) January (second or third week) – Students will receive PLAN test results.

Course Selections are in December—this is when students let counselors know they are interested in dual credit courses. Qualification Process—Can be found on the Guidance Website: www.concordiacrusaders.org and click on Academics/Guidance/Dual Creditwww.concordiacrusaders.org Mandatory Dual Credit Meeting— in January for any student who signs up during course selections

Registration Codes—These were given to parents and students last year if they attended CLHS in 9 th grade What if I don’t remember? Registration codes were given out tonight to those who have not registered. Mrs. Brennan can reset email addresses and passwords. Email her for assistance.—will need to provide her your email address and a password you use often and will remember. 4

October 10 th, 2013-- 1:15 – 3:00 PM 10 th grade – Students will be at fair from 2:15-3:00 PM Teachers will be responsible for a group of students to assist them in their research that afternoon College Fair Assignment– Task is located in Family Connection “About Me” Section “Tasks” “College Fair Assignment” Type up the answers to the questions you asked for 2 of the colleges/universities that most interested you. You must also check in with your teacher 3 times and talk with a minimum of 5 college representatives. This is a graded assignment for English class. You must upload your assignment for this task to be completed. Parents are HIGHLY encouraged to attend!!!

October 16 th – Half day of school All sophomores take the PLAN -- practice for the ACT 4 sections: English, Math, Reading, Science Scored 1-32 Curriculum based No penalty for guessing If interested in taking PSAT: $20 check/cash to Mrs. Brennan Deadline: Sept. 30 th. Will be required to make up PLAN on alternate date— October 22 nd in the afternoon (half day of school that day)

Set Realistic Academic Goals Be in School, on time, every day. Attend parent nights. Check Parent Portal once a week. Encourage student to be Involved in school activities. High school students are old enough to make many of their own decisions, but they still need their parents to provide guidance and set limits.

Realize that it’s your child’s responsibility to follow the school rules, get homework done, and prepare for tests. Work together with the school. Encourage good Time Management. Be a good listener. Praise good grades and extra effort. If you suspect that your child is…

It’s important for children to figure out how to take care of problems on their own. Help your child choose appropriate courses. If you want to change a behavior, first make sure that your child knows exactly what your expectations are. Computer use. Help your child explore and evaluate a variety of career and educational options. Make school a top priority.

10 th Grade (Preparing for College, p. 18-19) 1. Monitor academic progress. 2. Be involved in meaningful activities, both in and out of school. 3. Take PLAN test. 4. Consider a test prep course for the PSAT. 5. Start to explore and discuss college options. 6. Help select appropriate courses for Junior year. 7. Consider dual-credit and/or AP courses. 8. Discuss Summer Activities. 9. Update your Activities Record or Begin a Resume. 10. Add money to a college savings account.

Students who wish to take PSAT must give Mrs. Brennan check/cash by September 30 th. College Fair Assignment is due October 18 th. HOBY essays are due November 1 st. Learning Power, Inc. Emphasis on Quality of experience in high school, not Quantity. Family Connection: Different tasks will be assigned throughout the school year Ex: college résumé, college research, etc. Questions?
