How to write this paper! Chana’s Sophomore Writing Class Spring Semester

Find the Main Ideas Highlight (or underline) the important parts of each article. Who? What? When? Where? Why? How? Look up words you do not understand –you MUST understand your articles completely in order to do this assignment correctly!

Summarize/Paraphrase/Quote Summarize in your own words what the single main idea of the articles are Paraphrase important supporting points Consider any words, phrases, or brief passages that you believe should be quoted directly

Highlight your Quotes Use a different color highlighter or pen Remember the rules of quoting! A short quotation works well when integrated into a sentence Longer quotations can stand alone Quoting should be done only sparingly; you should have a good reason to include a direct quotation

Don’t forget your verbs Verbs that help you integrate quotations –These are listed on page 110 of the handout you received in class

Indirect Source Sometimes you may have to use an indirect source. An indirect source is a source cited in another source. For such indirect quotations, use "qtd. in" to indicate the source you actually consulted.

In-Text Citation of indirect source For example: Ravitch argues that high schools are pressured to act as "social service centers, and they don't do that well" (qtd. in Weisman 259). Note that, in most cases, a responsible researcher will attempt to find the original source, rather than citing an indirect source.
