2. EXPECTATIONS AT NCSU David Schwenker, Principal dschwenker@wcpss.net

3. Check-in (Cherry Building is THE PASSAGEWAY TO NCSU) All Students are required to check in at the Cherry Building prior to going to NCSU. If a child arrives in time to catch the shuttle bus to NCSU, they may ride. If a child arrives too late to catch the shuttle bus, the parent is responsible for getting them to NCSU AFTER checking in.

4. Check-out All students are required to check out at the Cherry Building prior to going home. Parents must check the student out at the Cherry Building PRIOR to picking them up at NCSU. Remember 3 absences from an NCSU course results in an “F”.

5. Witherspoon Hall (the place to be) Upon arriving at NCSU all students will report to Witherspoon and the African American Cultural Center to check in. Once checked in correctly students can: Attend their classes at the appropriate locations throughout campus Attend tutorials at the Undergraduate Tutorial Center, or with a specific professor after receiving a pass from the staff member in the AACC. Remain in the AACC and complete the necessary work for their college classes, work on school projects for their High School classes, complete research or groupwork necessary to pass all classes or work with a staff member.

6. Lunchtime (the Cherry Building only) Lunchtime happens at the Cherry Building only Students will all be able to arrive back to the school in time for lunch and those with afternoon classes on NCSU will eat prior to leaving. Juniors are not permitted to purchase food on or near the NCSU campus (Senior privilege)

7. Textbooks (STEM ECHS Property) Books for the classes will be purchased by Wake STEM ECHS. Failure to properly maintain the book for the next class will result in a textbook fee up to the cost of the book (ranging between $25 and $225). Books in the library may be used by our students for research but are the property of NCSU and must be treated with care.

8. Early Release and Special Holidays Early Release Days - Students must provide their own transportation if they have NCSU courses in the afternoon. Wake County Public School recognized Veteran’s Day as a holiday on our school calendar, however, NCSU has class on that day. Students are expected to attend their college courses, but parents must provide transportation.

9. Transportation Bus transportation will be provided by WCPSS for all students to and from the Cherry Building as in the past (express bussing). The buses will run with the start of school and school ending times. Transportation between Witherspoon at NCSU and the Cherry building will be provided by WCPSS at specific times during the school day in accordance with student schedules and lunch times.

10. Juniors Driving Juniors must submit the form that is on the STEM ECHS website with all the required information accepting the terms of the privilege of driving to and from school. Students will then be issued a parking tag that MUST be hung from their mirror whenever they are on campus. Juniors will be allotted parking spaces in the parking lot located 0.2 miles northeast of the Cherry Building off Barbour Drive.

11. Exams All students will be required to take the NCFINAL Exams and EOC Exams for the High School classes in which they are enrolled. Student will also be responsible for taking Final Exams for all college courses. The NCFINAL Exams and EOC Exams will be scheduled according to state policies and administered during the last 5 days of the semester. NCState Exams will be administered according to NCState policies and will be administered accordingly, though NOT on the same calendar as High School exams.

12. Exams continued… During Exam times it is the parent responsibility to ensure that the student has transportation to and from the exam site. Due to possible conflicts in NCSU Exam Schedules with High School coursework, we expect the students to make STEM ECHS staff aware of the conflict so we can schedule HS work, projects, presentations, etc. accordingly.

13. Tutoring and Extra Assistance NCSU provides tutorial locations and times, these will be discussed with the students during orientation. It will be the students’ responsibility to take advantage of these services. The counselor and college liaison will be able to assist with these services. Wake STEM ECHS staff will be available at Witherspoon during school hours to also assist students with projects and classwork. Juniors may also take advantage of the after-school program at Wake STEM ECHS, however, most of their work can be completed in the time at Witherspoon.

14. Eligibility to Take College Classes In order to enroll in college courses a student must achieve a 3.0 or higher weighted gpa in their high school coursework with no “D’s” by the end of their Sophomore year. For students falling below this threshhold, staff at STEM will complete a College Readiness Profile Rubric including Grades Standardized test scores Study habits, Self-Advocacy, etc Students may be required to write an essay explaining why they should be permitted to enroll Final Decisions will be made by the Staff

15. Eligibility to Take College Classes In order to enroll in college courses a student must have NO office referrals on their high school record. For students having an office referral, staff at STEM will complete a College Readiness Profile Rubric including Grades Standardized test scores Study habits, Self-Advocacy, etc Students may be required to write an essay explaining why they should be permitted to enroll Final Decisions will be made by the Staff

17. Eligibility to Continue in College Classes Students are not permitted to drop an NCSU class once it has begun Failure to maintain at least a 2.0 gpa in college coursework will result in non enrollment for the next semester Failure to have a 2.0 gpa in college coursework at the end of the Junior year will result in no college coursework for the first semester Senior year AND automatic graduation at the end of year 4

18. Emergencies on Campus Students will be directed to log-in to My Pack Portal and sign up to receive Wolfalerts to THEIR cell phones. When a Wolfalert message comes across, the students follow the directions or avoid the specific area listed. (Many alerts may not impact our students at all) In case of EMERGENCY, students will go to the nearest building and get SAFE. Once safe they are directed to text or e-mail specific staff members who will keep a roster of the incoming messages.

19. Emergencies on Campus continued… Students will REMAIN in their safe location until directed by an authority to do differently. When the “All Clear” is given, staff members will text, and/or e- mail the student with further directions. (Where to go to be picked up by Wake NCSU STEM ECHS staff and transported for parent pick up) PARENTS: We ask that you do NOT pick up your student from campus. Once we have all students back in our presence we will allow them to contact you for pick up or with further information. Parents may get WolfAlerts through Twitter or Facebook by signing up on the NCSU mainpage “emergency information” on the bottom left.
