Science Cluster Forum Mississauga, ON May 5, 2009

Agenda for Today Welcome & Introductions Overview of FOODTECH Canada Background to Growing Forward / Science Clusters and past AAFC Discussions Cluster Formation and Management Industry Input on identifying research priorities Research & Connection to Commercialization Sector Engagement & Support Next steps ….

A Canadian Network Twelve food & bio-product technology Centres have combined to become a “national” asset to the value added agri-food, seafood, bio-resource, and natural health products industries.

FOODTECH Members Food Processing Development Centre, Leduc, AB POS Pilot Plant Corp., Saskatoon, SK Saskatchewan Food Industry Development Centre, Saskatoon, SK Manitoba Food Development Centre, Portage La Prairie, MB Canadian International Grains Institute, Winnipeg, MB Guelph Food Technology Centre, Guelph, ON Cintech Agroalimentaire, Saint-Hyacinthe, PQ Centre Technologie des Produits Aquatiques, Gaspé, PQ Research and Productivity Centre, NB P.E.I. Food Technology Centre, Charlottetown, P.E.I. Canadian Institute of Fisheries Technology, Halifax, NS Centre for Aquaculture and Seafood Development, St. John’s, NFLD

Our combined resources $100M+ in Infrastructure $65M in Equipment 190 Staff with Technical Expertise (PhD, MSc, BSc) $33,000,000 annual Operating Budgets 207,000 ft 2 Pilot plant and Incubation facilities 20 international patents (on packaging technologies, extraction methods, food and bio-process and equipment technologies)

Proven in Innovation & Commercialization Each year the Centres, collectively…  Work with over 100 companies  Conduct more than $21 M in industry services and $14 M in technical commercialization projects  Respond to over 6,000 inquiries  Bring 250 new products to market  Train over 6,000 people

Member Services Technology Brokering & Market Intelligence: – Accessing novel technologies and assessing their fit; managing IP/licensing – Collection, dissemination and interpretation of technical and market intelligence Product Development & Process Design/Improvements: – Formulations, shelf-life testing, package and equipment design, sustainability Pilot Plant Facilities: – Scale up, prototype development, toll processing and incubation Training & Consulting: – Food Safety/HACCP, Quality Control, R&D, Productivity Improvement, and Regulatory support Analysis: Chemical, physical, sensory, microbiological Extracting bioactive components for health and nutrition: Creating Industrial Bio-Products and Bio-Fuels

Food industry findings Processors are in need of more product launch and market access support from the Centres. Looking for expertise throughout the entire commercialization process. Medium and large companies looking for partners to assist them with new technology advancement. New product runs and experimentation could be handled more cost effectively at a food Centre rather than interrupting processing schedules.

FOODTECH Objectives Establish a national chain of collaborative “Centres of Technical Expertise” (CTEs) that link directly to the strategic needs of the industry while supporting government innovation and prosperity initiatives. Optimize investment in capabilities and capacities in order to serve the innovation and commercialization needs of the industry.

FOODTECH Objectives Become the globally recognized “technology commercialization provider of choice” and portal for industry to develop value-added products through partnerships, quality service and an understanding of industry needs and market opportunities. Be the leading advocate for innovation, emerging technologies, commercialization best practices, and technology transfer investment in food and bio-products.

Enabling Commercialization FOODTECH members are involved in innovation and commercialization in the following ways: Proactively sourcing technologies and linking them with industry Progressing technology through applied research to product launch Educating and informing industry of technologies, their applications and market opportunities Providing technical assistance and business support throughout the development and launch phases.
